(Part 1) (Part 2)
(Part 3) --------------------------------------------------------------------
Love can be painful.
Akira learnt that, in the most painful way.
He screamed against the gag stuffing his mouth, the pain was beyond his limit as they crushed his bones one by one; the hard blows of the hammer repeatedly hit his stretched tied up limbs, mercilessly torturing him. He didn’t know if he had cry or not as he no longer had his eyes. They had gauged his eyes out after they purify him the other day, leaving him with empty eye sockets and blinded, stuck in darkness.
Could he cry now?
When he no longer has his eyes?
Another muffled screams escaped him when they repeated the burning, carefully they were running flames of the candles on his skin-not enough to burn him but was enough to extract the oil out of his skin. He wanted to beg for mercy. He wanted them to kill him already. He wanted to die.
He wanted to die.
He wanted this torment to end.
He knew he had to do this for his village. The villagers will remember him forever in honour, for being the sacrificial that saved the whole village from the sea god’s rage. But this was way too much. He had heard it before. The ritual’s ceremony. But he didn’t know that it would be this ruthless and painful. He gasped sharply in pain but almost calmed down the next second when he felt soothing apologetic caress on his cheek.
“Please…Can’t we put him to sleep…? This is too cruel…Even crueler than what the previous kids had…,” he heard a shaky voice and desperately begged through the gag for them to agree with the suggestion.
There was a soft guilty noise before another one spoke. “I wish we can…But you heard the shaman and Master…He had to be kept awake throughout the whole process…”
This time the sobbing sound was unmistakable. “But why? Why this year’s the ritual was too merciless? Other kids didn’t have to be kept awake throughout the whole deal. Just at the beginning and then we put them to sleep. I can’t…I can’t do this…Look at him!”
“Master said it is a must. We need to give the sea god more due to our good fortune recently…”
“Did the shaman order this?”
“No. It is Master’s order.”
“But-”
“Are you trying to question my order?”
Akira gasped at the voice of his master; Yutaka’s father.
Somehow he had uneasy feeling about this.
“Master!” The voices exclaimed in unison and obviously filled with fear.
“Leave. We want to talk to him…,” the man ordered and soon Akira heard the frantic sound of the previous people making their way out of there.
Soon, Akira felt a touch on his cheek, the soft fingers trailed up to his hair before his hair was tugged ruthlessly and he heard a sadistic chuckle and evil giggle from beside him.
“You deserve this you know~?” the voice of Yutaka’s mother chimed mercilessly as she tugged harsher on the hair, earning her another muffled scream from the helpless boy.
“Such a disgrace…How dare you seduce our son; making him to turn his back on us for you?” the sadist man added, carefully he added pressure on his crushed limbs, causing him to scream again.
“We never believe in that sea god. But we did the sacrifice anyway, as that was how we could gain the villager’s trust, and control them…,” she added, slapping his cheek harshly.
“But this year…we did it for different reason…You need to be taught, child…We had planned to marry Yutaka with a rich governor’s daughter; and you had to come into the picture, being his so-called love of life…,” he chuckled evilly, trailing his fingers down.
And Akira screamed in agony when he thrust into him all of sudden.
“You slept with our son, right~? Now why don’t you take his father?”
The muffled screams of agony continued when the man kept raping him, ruthlessly abusing his maimed body the whole way. The woman played her part in torturing him too. Hot iron glided on his skin, burning his skin beyond repair and once the man done with him, filling him full with sticky fluid, she smirked wickedly and pushed the hot iron inside him.
This time Akira knew he had cried.
Trails of tears wetted his cheeks, as he kept screaming against the gag while the woman thrust the red burning iron inside his abused body. His last scream anyhow, disappeared completely when the ruthless man pulled off his gag; only to pour burning corrosive liquid into his throat.
Akira cried helplessly, starting to lose consciousness now.
Yutaka, I love you.
And he blacked out as the torture resumed.
------------------------------------------------------------------
“Kai? Kai? KAI!! Wake up!!!”
Kai’s eyes snapped open immediately at the vigorous shaking on his shoulder and he was greeted with Ruki’s worried frown as he grimaced, one hand flew up to rub his stressed temple. Soon, he had graceful elegant fingers brushing his hand away and resumed to massage his temple as he slowly relaxed, his breathing calmed down and he blinked dazedly at his worried friends.
“It had gotten worse…Kai, you need to find help!” Aoi half-screeched as he reached out to wipe Kai’s cheek; he was gently drying the tears on the abnormally warm skin.
“I’m fine…,” Kai sighed, rubbing his eyes gingerly. “How long I was out?”
“Not even an hour…,” Ruki said, gazing at the older man in worry. “And you’re not fine at all. Last time you were only sleep-talking. Now it had gotten worse. You even cried and screaming, Kai!” he growled in concern and planted his hand on the damp cheek. “Not to mention that your temperature had spiked up! You’re catching a fever, dude!
“I’m just tired…It was a long journey to come here…,” Kai denied instead, and tried to smile though his smile was broken, ragged with his exhaustion.
“Dude…You didn’t hear yourself…We thought you were really in agony when you screamed earlier…,” Aoi shook his head in disagreement, he was shuddering a bit. “That was one eerie pained scream you gave out earlier…”
Uruha moved his hands from massaging Kai’s temple to rub the stiff shoulders. “Maybe you should rest here, Kai…Let me and Ruki do the interviews and researches. Aoi can easily handle the filming without your aid. Besides, you were only responsible for editing the video after all. No need to join us for now. You can help us once you’re better and less exhausted…,” he said sternly, now helping Kai to get out of the dark denim jacket the other was wearing and once he had Kai in a comfortable state, he pushed Kai back to the bed. “Get some more sleep. I have sleeping pills by your bed. Take two of them and hope that you get a peaceful nightmare-less sleep.”
Kai was about to argue but the soft comfortable bed was too soothing underneath his sore body. He lifted his torso slightly up to grab the pills and Uruha quickly handed him a bottle of water, which he then emptied almost instantly after he swallowed the pills. Ruki had pushed him back to bed, the younger man tucked Kai neatly under the blanket as the brunette man yawned tiredly. Aoi adjusted the air conditioner to accommodate the exhausted man.
“Sleep well, Kai~” The long-haired man grinned warily, the light strip of gold of his hair bounced slightly as he bent to place a damp cloth over Kai’s hot forehead. “We’ll get a doctor to check on you soon.”
Kai just nodded weakly, too tired to speak now. His friends bid him good bye and soon he was left alone in the hotel room, curling against his blanket as he stared blankly to the clear glass of his window as he waited for the effects of the medicine to kick in. He stared at the clear bluish water of the sea outside his window and since the hotel was situated on a higher spot than the rest of the town, he got the most excellent view of the beautiful sea.
Kai was blinking blankly at the sea when he saw it.
An enchanting flash of beauty-somehow looked like silver or deep turquoise-that emerged mysteriously by the calm sea.
Kai quickly sat, groping blindly for his binocular on the nightstand, never did he tore his gaze away from the window as he hoped to see the flash again. And he did saw the flash again; he was gaping in awe as he observed the glittering colors and acknowledged that it was indeed a deep turquoise, only it flashed silver as the sunlight hit it. Strips of faint rainbow flash danced to its movement, flickering charmingly as the warm sun light hit the smooth surface. The strange object flicked nervously and Kai soon gasped in shock and disbelief when he adjusted his binocular and got a better look of the object.
It was a tail.
A fish-like tail that looked like something that would came out from mermaids’ fairy tale.
Kai observed a little bit more careful and soon was gasping more when there was a pair of smouldering aquamarine orbs came to his view-just the little part of the head (Kai was dazzled with the wet golden locks) along with the mystical eyes emerged from the sea. Kai blinked to his binocular, half-convinced that whatever the creature was, it was staring back at him as said eyes gazed mysteriously; almost like knowing that Kai was watching, and the eyes kept staring at Kai, piercing straight to his soul.
I was waiting for you…
Kai gasped at the sudden voice and he looked around, just in case his friends had returned.
No one. He was alone there.
Kai returned to his observing, only to whine in disappointment upon noticing that the enchanting object of his observation had disappeared. He sighed, putting his binocular back to the night stand and lay on his bed. He pondered about the strange creature, yawning occasionally as the sleeping drug finally kicked in his system and his eyes slowly drooped down, his consciousness wandered around in the mystical realm of human’s mind.
I was waiting for you…Centuries, I’ve been waiting…
Centuries of waiting to be reunited with you again.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Uruha glared in disbelief and disapproval when Kai joined them at the jetty.
“Kai!!” Aoi had cheered instead, dancing dangerously around as he weaved his way to the approaching Kai to pat the brunette’s back. “You’re better!”
“Yes, Aoi..I’m better now…,” Kai laughed, and smiled sheepishly to the glaring Uruha and frowning Ruki. “Really guys…I did get peaceful good sleep. And thank you for sending the doctor.”
Uruha glared again though he smiled anyway at Kai’s refreshed face while Ruki kept frowning at the brunette.
“Relax, Ruu…I’m better now…,” Kai soothed, moving closer to the shorter man and ruffled the blonde head playfully.
“If you fainted here…I’m gonna throw you into the sea…Let the sea god eat you…,” Ruki grumbled, pouting a bit at the destruction of his gorgeous hairstyle.
Aoi had laughed at that, his voice boomed loudly and attracted the fishermen there.
Though, the old fisherman they were interviewing frowned at Ruki in disapproval.
“You’re not playing with the sea god’s power, child…,” he stated, staring at Ruki.
Aoi stopped laughing while Uruha simultaneously jabbed Ruki’s ribs in warning.
“Ouch…,” Ruki muttered under his breath.
“So you still believe in the myth…?” Uruha asked; notebook in his hand as Aoi now had started filming again.
“He exists. The Theoi Halioi….Though he is a bit different compared to the one before the great destruction…,” The man spoke in a deep mystical voice. “This one is kinder and no longer requests sacrificial.”
“So sea gods can retire and hand their job to a new one?” Ruki said almost sarcastically before he yelped and glared at Uruha. “Uru!”
“Sorry about him,” Uruha tilted his head slightly to the side, smiling to the amused fisherman.
“It’s okay. I understand you young people…You hardly believe in these kind of things…,” He said then, shifting a bit on the bench he was sitting on as his hands deftly repaired his net. “But trust me. He exists. If you’re lucky, you might get a glimpse of him, if he decided to be nice and materialized himself in front of you…”
“Whoa. You can see a sea god?? I thought he was only an invisible spirit in the water! We can actually see him? Wicked.” Ruki stated in awe, he ducked agilely when Uruha wanted to jab his already bruised side again.
“If you’re lucky, yes you can. Some of the shrine maiden had seen him, only once, a glimpse of the kind Theoi Halioi …Including my granddaughter..,” The man smiled softly.
“What did he look like? When he showed himself…Is he pretty? Or scary?” Uruha asked, genuinely interested.
“According to my granddaughter and other maiden, he looks like a mermaid…”
Kai stiffened, staring at the man incredulously.
“Mermaid?”
“Heavenly beautiful one, as described by all witnesses. Golden silky hair, deep aquamarine eyes but his tail…the enchanting..”
However, Kai was the one that resumed his words.
“…The enchanting turquoise tail that turned silver under the sunlight beams, flashing rainbow strips charmingly in the sea water as the light hit it…”
The busy jetty immediately went silent.
Everyone was staring at the young man, stopping their job and talk.
The old man was clearly stunned at Kai’s words. But soon he smiled broadly to Kai. “It seems like you have seen him…”
Uruha, Aoi and Ruki stared at Kai, jaws slacked down incredulously.
“HOLY CRAP KAI YOU LUCKY BASTARD!”
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
When they threw him into the sea, Akira thought he was going to die.
They had chopped his limbs off, leaving him helpless and immobile while they dressed him up in silky-like kimono before the ceremony started. Akira was disgusted at the Master and his wife’s hypocrisy. After the man had practically raped and tortured him, his wife played her part in giving him the taste of hell but yet now they were whispering him for apology and blessing. Though he knew that it was just a façade; a façade to lie to the villagers but it still disgusted him to the pit of his stomach.
They tortured him, not for saving the village from sea god’s wrath but because they didn’t want him to exist for Yutaka.
Akira felt his heart ached at that, as he knew that he still had Yutaka and his mother that loved him to the very end but yet he had to die like this. He was hurt; sorrow filled his heart at the thought of unable to voice out his reply of love to the two people that he loved so much earlier as his throat was thoroughly destroyed from the corrosive liquid they forced him to drink. Trapped in his sorrow and hurt, Akira could only cry.
And when the shaman threw him into the sea, all that he could felt was anger and rage.
He didn’t deserve this.
He didn’t deserve these torments.
He didn’t deserve the death as well.
He didn’t deserve this hell just because he fell in love with Yutaka.
The sorrow in his heart changed to total fury as he squirmed in his helpless state, trying hard to at least free himself from the so-called scared bonds that winded around his body. He battled against the crushing water, not even caring that the salty water had seeped into his bandages and hurt his wounds, his amputated limbs would be nothing of use now and soon the lack of oxygen will kill him but he didn’t care. He wanted revenge. He wanted they tasted what he had felt. He wanted them to pay, to feel his wrath.
Because he didn’t deserve any of this.
I don’t deserve this.
And he was surprised when the water worked with him, said water broke his bonds, freeing him from the ropes and very soon he had his bandages mysteriously removed and something; something warm against the cold water was gently holding him, helping him to float upright in the water.
Yes, my dear…You didn’t deserve this.
Akira was shocked at the calm echoing voices.
Who?
He didn’t receive a reply, but was asked a question instead.
Do you want to die?
Akira hiccupped. No…He admitted, whimpering inside his mind as the warmth started to engulf him.
Do you want them to be punished?
Akira’s rage overpowered his compassionate mind. YES.
Then live. As a part of the sea. A part of us; the children of the sea, the very ones they killed all these years…
What?
You’re stronger than any of us.
Akira now could differentiate the voices. He could hear voices of boys and girls, some had matured but most of them sounded younger than him as they surrounded him; he swore that the suffocating lack of oxygen didn’t bother him anymore as he felt hands, lithe hands touched him soothingly.
Help us.
We didn’t choose to die.
Nor did the sea god want us.
Mother of sea never wanted us to die.
She loves us very much.
We didn’t deserve to die this way.
We didn’t deserve the torture.
We didn’t deserve to die, not because of their hypocrisy and selfishness.
You’re stronger than us.
Your rage and sorrow carry a strong power.
Mother will help you.
Thus, help us, Akira…
By this point Akira knew he could breathe underwater. He inhaled deeply and gasped as he felt a light brush over his blind eyes.
Open your eyes, dear…
Enchanted by the gentle soothing motherly voice, Akira opened his eyes.
And he was shocked to the fact that he could see again, how he even could do that was a mystery. And floating before him was dozens of translucent figures, the clear shadows of each of the children he knew were sacrificed all these decades. He blinked in daze, surprised as he automatically lifted his hands up to touch his previously blinded eyes and he found that he had his hands again, smooth and untainted, perfect lean arms to replace the ones they had chopped off before. He looked down, pleasantly surprised to see that there was a strong beautiful tail attached to his hips, perfectly replacing his amputated legs.
There was a soft invisible touch on his cheek and Akira immediately looked up, longing for his lovely mother.
Will you live as a part of me, my child?
Akira knew that he was actually talking to the sea herself.
Thus, he smiled grimly and nodded.
Very well. From now on your name is Reita. My son. The guardian of this coast.
Akira just bowed to the invisible voice and soon he felt the lithe hands touching him again.
Lent us your rage, Reita. One of them had said.
Help us. Other voices chorused.
Akira-or rather Reita now-closed his eyes as he felt the power from his rage before gathered around him.
Yes. He needed to stop this corrupted sacrificial rituals.
There will no more innocent souls being slaughtered for his gentle mother.
No more sacrificial for the lovely sea.
Help us.
Aquamarine eyes fluttered open, clear with determination and anger.
Akira remembered the torments he had gone through.
He remembered the real reason they killed him. Because they wanted to separate him from his love.
Tears of rage escaped his eyes. The Earth rocked violently beneath him, interpreting his emotions in an outrage violent movement. The sea moved to his will, his mother blessed his rage, willingly followed the path of his vengeance. The un-peaceful souls of the sacrificial supported him, resting their lithe hands over him, connecting their feelings, sharing the same anger and hurt of the hell they had gone through.
Help us exact our vengeance on our corrupted village.
And Akira threw his head back, silky golden strands fell graciously to his smooth shoulder as he yelled his wrath out, the sea moved willingly to accommodate his desire, high monstrous waves moved to his emotion, mercilessly and violently destroyed their corrupted village.
Though there was only one thing Akira could think of.
He looked past the waves and smiled as he saw Yutaka had waited calmly to greet him.
Akira sighed and joined the waves of his rage, uniting himself with his mother, being a part of the raging sea himself as he embraced Yutaka, pleased that the brunette still loved him enough to risk greeting his anger.
Yutaka.
And nothing pleased him more when Yutaka replied his call back.
“Akira.”
--------------------------------------------------
Yuki collapsed in fear, kneeling weakly as she stared in horror as the sea retreated back to its original position; the water was calm now but it still didn’t change the dreadful sight it left behind. Dead mangled bodies and broken bits of houses scattered everywhere on their previously beautiful village. Everyone had died. They died to the rage of the sea, unable to save themselves even if they had run to a higher place but the sea was not being merciful. Every live was wiped out, completely destroyed as the violent waves assaulted them earlier.
Everyone had died.
Everyone but Yuki and Akira’s mother.
Yuki scooted to the sobbing woman and hugged her tight, too terrified to stay on her usual calm and composed demeanor. The woman hugged her tight, murmuring comforting words to her, being the same lovely mother she used to beg for love when her own mother abandoned her for fortunes all these time. They soon stood shakily as they made their way down the hill; trying to find out if anyone else had survived the sea’s wrath.
It was noon when they started moving; and now by the sunset, they had encountered only dead bodies and mangled carcasses.
No one else had survived.
They were about to move away to find shelter when they heard the soft cry. Curious and hopeful, they moved to the source of the cry, only to freeze in shock when they saw the sobbing person.
“Akira?” They had mouthed in unison, surprised upon seeing the supposedly dead boy.
Akira looked up to them and smiled shakily. They stared at him in awe and wonder, noticing the change on him. His previously maimed body now was flawless, lean strong arms had replaced the one the cruel people had chopped off at the shrine while his smouldering aquamarine eyes pierced straight to their hearts, though they still bore the same loving look in his previously deep mocha eyes. His deep raven hair had changed, silky golden strands framed his face perfectly, some wet long strands had fell graciously to his shoulders. He smiled wider, gazing longingly at them before he retreated to the sea and the last thing they saw from him was his shiny deep turquoise tail that flicked strongly as he dived back to the depth of the sea.
“It is him, right?” The old woman whispered in disbelief though a small grateful smile had decorated her face. “It is Akira, right?”
Yuki blinked in daze before she smiled too. “Yes it’s him.”
They were about to hug each other in total gratefulness when they noticed the still body lying just in front the rock Akira had leant to earlier. Both females neared their distance to the lifeless body and Yuki had collapsed again, kneeling in remorse by the rock, her body shook violently as tears broke through their eyes. Yuki sobbed but willed herself to take out her handkerchief and placed it over the calm handsome face.
“Rest in peace, big brother…”
-----------------------------------------------------------
“You know what? If we turn this to a movie, it will be a one hell of worth-to-cry story.” Ruki giggled, playing with his pencil as they had gathered in their shared room again, now all four of them had sat on the floor, papers scattered in front of them.
“I admit that it was a thrilling and interesting myth they have here…,” Uruha nodded, deciding to lie on his tummy and tapped his pencil nervously on the papers. “Maybe we could make a short movie out of it.”
“We need actors and actress for that..,” Aoi grinned, checking his video camera. “And I need new tapes if we want to do that….”
“Well, Gackt-san did say that if we could add a good movie in our documentary, the 20 marks of creativity are rightfully ours…,” Ruki grinned eagerly, almost like bouncing on his seat.
Uruha rolled his eyes. “Do you think it is easy to make a good short movie?”
“We have you to write the scripts, Aoi to film it, me to do the props and setting and Kai to edit everything. We will create an epic movie…,” Ruki bit the inside of his cheeks cutely as he wiggled his eyebrow to his friends.
“But speaking of scripts…The real legend…Did Yutaka died?” Aoi suddenly said, frowning slightly. “It’s kinda sad, ne? He loves Akira a lot but yet in the end he died… And if Akira indeed had turned to a sea deity, it like Akira was the one killing him…”
“But that was how the legend went, right? The old man told us that Yuki found Yutaka dead after the great tsunami…,” Uruha sighed too, wiping the lenses of his glasses.
“And they did said that when Yuki was married to a young man from neighboring village, they had gone through all of the trouble to transfer Yutaka’s coffin to the shrine and make a memorial for him…,” Ruki piped in his input, he was grinning smugly at the facts and information he managed to gather in the interviews he conducted earlier that day.
“Ah, yes. The shrine…Do you think they will allow us to film some scenes there? Or perhaps get a look on Yutaka’s grave..?” Aoi frowned; subconsciously he was fiddling with the strap of his camera.
“There was no use,” Uruha shook his head sadly.
“What? Why?”
“They told me that another tsunami had wiped the whole shrine out, Yutaka’s coffin had disappeared.”
“Aww…Too bad…”
“That was sad…,” Ruki sighed.
“If we want to make a movie out of this legend, maybe we should change the ending…,” Uruha frowned, lifting his paper up and read the writings carefully.
“Yes!” Aoi cheered. “We don’t have to kill Yutaka’s character! I’d love to see him being united back with Akira~”
“Yeah, maybe we should…,” Ruki agreed before he finally noticed that one of them didn’t say anything since they started their brainstorming. “Kai? What do you think of changing the ending?”
All eyes then stared at the dark-haired man though Kai still had that dreamy look on his face, his eyes gazed blankly at the clear window. They exchanged a look and sighed softly when Kai looked like he was ignoring them.
“Kai!!”
Silence.
“Kai-chan~!”
More silence.
“KAI!!!”
And finally a response.
“Nnn?”
“Come on! Join us! What do you think? Should we follow the legend or changed the ending a bit?” Ruki prompted, trying to invite Kai to get more involved in their conversation. “I think that Yutaka’s death at the end was sad too…”
When Kai had turned his head to look at them, all three of them felt chills travelling down their spines as the dimpled man stared at them with mystical gaze, his eyes bore ancient look that made them felt inferior.
“Yutaka didn’t die.” Kai said blankly.
“What?” All three of them exclaimed in surprise.
“He just….being put to sleep…”
“Eh?”
“Akira had gone overboard. In his rage, he had killed innocents too. Children and women. They died to his wrath. And he couldn’t take Yutaka with him until he done atoning his sins of taking the innocent lives of his wrath’s victims…”
All three young men were staring at him in disbelief as they immediately gone slacked-jaw.
“What are you talking abo-”
Kai tilted his head slightly to stare at his friends. His face was still blank and dreamy. Then suddenly, he stood and grabbed his jacket.
“Kai?”
“I want to take a walk.”
“But-”
“I’ll take the key with me. No need to wait for me to return.”
And he left just like that, leaving his flabbergasted friends behind.
Aoi stared at the stunned Uruha and Ruki. “What the hell is wrong with that guy?”
-------------------------------------------------------------
A/n: I don't know why I can't end this as a short one shot/two shots....Enjoy anyhow. Now, anyone can guess how Kai came into the story of Yutaka and Akira?
