(Part 1)
(Part 2) (Previous) (Next) --------------------------------------------------------------------
“I have something to tell you…”
“Um? What is it, nii-chan?”
“I’m a demon.”
There was a beat of silence as little Reita just stood there, staring at Kai.
Kai smiled grimly, waiting for the screams of fear and rejection.
“Scared? I can leave you alone if you want..,” Kai said softly when Reita remained petrified for a good ten minutes.
Then to his surprise, the small lithe arms found their way round his neck and the boy suddenly glomped him and clung tightly to him.
“It doesn’t matter what you are. I still love you~ And I don’t want you to leave. Don’t leave me because I love you a lot!” Reita giggled childishly, kissing Kai’s cheek softly.
“Aren’t you afraid of me?” Needless to say, from the tone of his incredulous question; Kai just survived an unsuccessful heart attack.
“Why should I?” Reita asked back, nuzzling his nose to the strong neck.
“I’m a demon. I walk among humans; feeding on their emotions and stealing their unhappy souls…Doesn’t that scare you?” Kai asked again, tilting the adorable chubby face up to receive eye contact from the young boy. “Aren't you scared that I will steal your soul?”
Reita blinked adorably, innocence and honesty filled his doe wide eyes while he placed his small slender palms on each of Kai’s cheeks and nuzzled their noses together as he spoke innocently.
“Why should I? My soul is always yours, FOREVER.”
Pale eyelids flutter open slowly. Reita blinks in daze and he frowns then, trying to think clearly against his spinning head before he sighs heavily and rests his head back against the soft pillow. He doesn’t even care about the stinging pain under the bandages on his chest when he throws his body back to the bed. He closes his eyes again; his forehead crinkles in focus as he let every single piece of his broken long lost memory return to him, slowly unfolding the truth.
The first memory took place the night his father died.
He was sobbing alone by the jetty of the lake, isolating himself in his secret meadow as he mourned over the death of his father. He cried and cried, remembering the kind man’s smile and love to him, their great time together and he is totally lost in his mourning to notice the frowning midnight creature right behind him.
“It’s dangerous for a child of your age to be alone here at this time of night…”
Reita’s head snapped up from his knees at the quiet voice and he immediately turned around, just to gape at the tall figure that was looking down at him. He gasped, sensing the weird aura from the taller and obviously older male before another gasp escaped him as the male leant down, long hair bounces beautifully to the movement while one cold thumb ran under his teary eyes, cautiously wiping his tears away.
“Why are you crying?” The question was quiet yet serious.
Reita hiccupped, choking back a sob. “My father died…”
A dimpled smile cracked across the handsome face of the older male as he patted the shaggy blond head. “Aww…you poor boy….”
Reita gulps bitterly, remembering how that event went by with him making a new friend. He remembers how safe and comforted he was that night when Kai sat by his side at the edge of the jetty and pulled him into a warm hug; the disguised demon then charmingly introduced himself.
That was the beginning-the moment he had gotten to know Kai.
The little event that drastically changed his life.
He exhales heavily when another memory returns to him.
He never had a happy childhood. His mother ignored him. Kenji always abused him. The children in the playground loved to pick on him. Nobody ever showed kindness to him aside from the Shiroyama family next door.
Hence, he always ran to Kai every time he needed company. The disguised demon was always there in the meadow with a warm smile on his face. The strong arms always welcomed him, comforting him with such love that he thought it would be okay for him to suffer throughout the day if he could sneak to the meadow to meet Kai at night.
For some reason, Kai never showed his presence during broad daylight.
Until that day; the day Kai showed up in broad daylight.
Again, Reita found himself curling to his knees, sobbing over his bad life though this time he had a small ball with him, said ball rolled lazily by his side. He decided to sit there until night fell so that he could curl to the brunette’s warm embrace and sooth his misery away. He sighed against his knees, wondering why the kids didn’t want to play with him before he smelled the light wisp of comforting fragrance he came to recognize since he met Kai. He turned around, tears still glistening on his cheeks, just to be shocked when a pair of lips brushed softly on his damp cheeks, soothingly kissing his tears away.
“It’s play time. The rest of the kids are at the playground,” Kai spoke, grabbing the ball into his hand. “Why don’t you play with them?”
“They don’t want to play with me….,” Reita sobbed, looking down to avoid meeting Kai’s piercing gaze.
“Aww…That’s bad. You poor boy…,” There, the soft soothing coo and a pat on his head successfully made Reita whimper and rub the remainder of his tears away.
Soon, there was a gasp of shock. His eyes blinked in surprise when he heard the sound of the ball that bounced tauntingly and when he lifted his face up, he was greeted with Kai’s challenging grin-the long-haired brunette was actually issuing a challenge to him.
“Ehh?? What are you doing??!” He exclaimed in awe and wonder then, watching Kai bounced the ball around and weave agilely with magnificent skills.
“Isn’t it obvious, sweetheart? I’m playing against you~~ Defeat me if you can…”
A scowl. Followed by a childish giggle. “I’m going to defeat you!”
“Suure, love~~”
Since then Kai had been his permanent playmate.
And they played various games every day, every week, all the time.
Reita whimpers softly, his hands trail down to the bandages on his chest.
Man, how could he forget how important Kai was in his life before?
The brunette was everything to him. Kai was the one that will sooth his pain away from all of the abuse he had gone through. The brunette’s wide shoulders were his place to cry on every time the cold treatment from his mother gave him had gotten too unbearable to him to endure. Those shoulders were the place he leant his head against and cried his misery out. Kai’s warm embrace was the only place he could get the love he supposedly got from his mother. The brunette, going against all law of demon’s nature has showered him with love, care and attention.
Thus when Kai came up to him one day for a good bye, all that he could ask was ‘why?’.
Reita bites his lip at the bitter memory.
He never saw Kai again after that day. He sought everywhere, daring himself to wander aimlessly in the dark forest, not even considering the risk of being a skinny meal walking for some random hungry beast as he called out Kai’s name over and over again-he was unwilling to say good bye to his only friend. Sure he found Kai again afterwards, when he was dying from the terrible fall off the cliff. And he was happy at the little reunion despite the fact that he was bleeding to death.
And when Kai healed him, he thought that they weren't going to be separated again. Not when Kai said that he was tied to Reita. Not when Kai promised him that he wouldn't leave Reita again.
Reita thought that they would be together forever.
Hence, when he heard Kai instruct Maria to erase all of his memories about Kai, Reita was horrified.
“Hey, can you do me a favour?”
Reita stiffened at that, perking his ears up in his half-conscious state to hear the woman’s reply.
“That depends. What do you need me for?”
"I can do it myself, but you’re better at it than me…so…,” he heard Kai said sheepishly.
“So what? What do you want me to do?”
“Erase ALL of his memories about me.”
“NO!!” Reita actually shot up at that, squirming violently in Kai’s arms, as he tried to muster all of his energy to hit Kai; he was trying hard to inflict some pain to the amused demon. “You promised! You promised! You said that you wouldn't leave me again!!” He flailed around, thrashing and kicking blindly though his hands never let go of Kai’s shirt.
Kai held him still, soft lips pressed against his forehead kindly. “I promised. And I will keep my words. I won’t leave you again, you will always be in my watch…,” here, Kai hesitated before he smiled bitterly and caressed Reita’s forehead.
“But you don’t have to know that. You can live obliviously without noticing that I am around…”
“No…,” Reita whimpered, shaking his head violently as he tried hard to sought for an escape while Maria moved closer to him. “I don’t want to forget you…Please don’t…”
Kai kissed him again, this time a fierce kiss on his lips that left him breathless and dazed. The brunette caressed his teary eyes, arms holding him tight to the muscular chest.
“16 years. That is my limit. If you remember me on your own before the day of your sixteenth birthday ended, I’m all yours. That is my promise, sweetheart…,” Kai cooed softly.
“What if I can’t remember you?” Reita’s voice shook in doubt and worries.
“If that is the case…,” Kai sighed sadly though he put up his dimpled smile again. “No harm done apparently. The magic I used to resurrect you will consume me thoroughly and you will have your happy life as a normal human.”
Reita’s eyes were wide at that as he clutched Kai’s shoulder tightly. “What about you? What will happen to you if I fail to remember before the day of my sixteenth birthday ends?”
Kai just stared at him forlornly.
“Time to sleep, love~”
And his memories about Kai just stop there.
Damn.
If he survives this, remind him to kill Kai.
That dimpled demon deserves a kick in the ass for instructing Maria to erase his memories without his consent like that.
Reita opens his eyes again, smiling grimly at the return of his lost memories. He shifts around, wincing a bit at the sharp stinging on his chest as he tries his best to sit. He wants to get out from whatever this place he is stuck in. He wants to find Kai and kick the brunette’s firm ass for being such masochistic demon.
“I’m gonna kill you Kai…,” he growls as he lifts himself out of the carved bed, one hand clutching his bandaged chest and he has to wonder why that spot right above his heart hurt so much. He groans in pain, relying on the cold wall as he grumbles grudgingly under his breath. “I’m seriously going to kill your miserable masochistic ass, Kai…”
“You already did it. You’re killing him right now.”
Sure, Reita didn’t expect to hear Maria’s voice there.
Hence, he turns his head towards the source of her voice and frowns a bit upon seeing the solemn demon leaning casually against the wall.
“What do you mean?” Reita blinks in confusion at the dark-haired demon; he didn’t even flinch at the sight of her claws that were used to assault him earlier.
The female demon rolls her glowing purple eyes. “I thought when I injected your memories back to you…,” she points to the hurting spot on his chest, “…you would've remembered everything…”
Reita looks down at the bandage on his chest. “You injected my memories through my heart?” he asks in bewilderment.
Maria rolls her eyes again. “Actually it has to go through your soul. And your soul is situated at the centre of your body. I just haven’t done that for a long time so it got a bit dirty and painful…,” she shrugs, almost sounding apologetic. “It will heal very soon.”
Reita is back on his guard again. “Will that be important when you are going to destroy me soon?” He questions, remembering the woman’s words before.
“Sorry sweetheart. We have to destroy you to save our king.”
Reita is perfectly aware the way her body stiffens, preparing to lunge for an attack.
Here, Maria smirks demonically. “Yeah. I shouldn’t have bothered myself thinking about your healing since we’re going to kill you soon~~”
Reita stiffens at that and tenses his body defensively. “It is funny that you didn’t kill me earlier…,” he hisses back venomously.
Maria just shrugs. “The queen wanted to be merciful and give you a chance for one last wish and perhaps knowing the reason you have to be killed.” She walks casually forward, licking her claws as she eyes Reita with that predatory look. “Do you want to know why we want to destroy you?”
“To save your king, right?” Reita scowls, mirroring her movements by backing away.
“Yup~ We have to destroy you because Kai has stupidly tied himself to you without completing the magic. And now the magic is consuming his existence while you're sucking his life power out to strengthen yourself. We have no time you know~ There's only three hours left until the end of your birthday and if we don't do something, he will die. I bet you have seen a black hole somewhere on his body? That is what the magic does. The hole will suck him to the oblivion of death once the clock strikes twelve tonight and by then, there is nothing we can do. He will die, gone just like that. He will die while you turn back to a human and live.”
Reita’s mentally plotting to escape stops at the mention of Kai. Wait, wait, wait….Kai is their king??? Certainly, he is shocked at the revelation. He then starts listening to her after the mention of his lover’s name. And throughout her speech, his eyes widen at each of her words and soon he finds himself shaking and gaping in horror.
Weird enough it is, the horror isn't directed towards himself.
He is actually horrified upon hearing Kai’s soon-to-be fate.
Yes, he said that he wants to kill Kai but he doesn’t mean it literally. It was just an expression of his anger and frustration. He had no idea at all that he is already killing Kai, that he is the one who is killing the brunette by slowly draining the other’s life power to strengthen his own body. He had no idea at all that Kai would go that far to ensure that he is alive.
Has anyone ever thought that such selfless sacrificial act could come from a demon?
“So you have to kill me because once I am dead, there is nothing that is going to suck his life out of him right?” Reita asks softly, his shaking body slowly relaxes as he regains his firm standing position.
“Broken device can’t pull the power of the battery out, analogically speaking…,” she agrees, nodding once.
Reita bites his lips then and thoroughly relaxes his body; a smile is on his face.
Well, Kai…Two can play at this sacrificing game.
“Then kill me. If killing me can save him, just do it. He has done enough for me and if this can save him, I’m willing to do it.” Reita says firmly, the smile never left his face. “Just tell him, and also my family that I love them so much,” he adds; his voice cracks a bit though the determination is still there in his eyes.
Maria’s face softens at his words. The beautiful demon reaches out for him and Reita has to make sure he doesn’t flinch when her clawed hands make contact with his cheeks. She sighs then, looking at him apologetically with guilt written all over her face.
“Now I understand why he loves you.”
Reita doesn’t reply as he focuses on relaxing his body and getting prepared for his death.
“I'll try not to hurt you too much…,” Maria whimpers, now she is positively feeling guilty and is on the verge on giving up on her task.
“Thank you,” Reita smiles, closing his eyes when she backs away to gather some momentum and crouches dangerously, her lips curl back as her fangs glint ominously along with her claws.
Reita just stands there, eyes closed, defenseless and ready to die, only to be shocked when he hears the sound of one fast movement which then is followed by Maria’s horrified gasp, a groan of pain and something wet and sticky suddenly splatters onto his face. He immediately opens his eyes and blinks in confusion at the viscous black substance that is dripping down his face, only then to notice the metallic smell of blood from the substance. Another groan of pain attracts his attention then and he gasps, his face twists to one of absolute horror upon seeing the person that has jumped between him and Maria earlier.
“KAI!!!”
