[For Ines and For L] Something's waiting and about to pounce...

Oct 21, 2013 23:42

The days are getting shorter, the nights are getting longer. Even the darkness seems deeper than usual. Ryuk has been been taking advantage of the shadows to lurk and watch people going about their business, but there are two people in particular he's been wanting to see, the snarky lady who finds him amusing and the disheveled detective whom he ( Read more... )

L was going about his business of collecting further candy from the plothole when he spots movement in the corner of his eye, glances, and is effectively startled.

He may be more or less allied to Ryuk, he's still not used to this.

"Hello, shinigami."

Ryuk comes down from the knife rack he'd been perched on and hovers closer, inspecting any sweets L might have acquired, looking to see if there's any apple-flavored ones.

"Hiya, L, how's the detecting going?" he asks.

"As it should," L replies slowly. "How are you, shinigami?"

"Boooorred," Ryuk groans. "Ever since I ditched those *losers* I was drummin' for. I'd almost go back to that cheap pair of wannabes, but I dunno what'd be worse, them or bein' bored."

"And why is it," L asks lightly, eyes on a lollipop which he is delicately unwrapping, "that you would consider a return, if you dislike these people so much, shinigami?"

"Because I'm booooored to death," Ryuk grumbles, laying himself flat on a countertop, spidery arm and leg dangling toward the floor.

Oh, Ryuk, we love you lots.

"Would you care for a little.... challenge, then, shinigami?"

L is looking into his pocket.

Those *might* be apple toffees he's reaching for.

I'm thinking he might challenge Ryuk to bug the SAngel office with "steampunk" bugs. Think that could be possible? It would explain why L is able to listen in to the meeting without being there....

Ryuk lifts his head. "Would I? I'm up for most anything, to break up the boring *quiet* here," he says, watching L search through his pocket. "What'd yah have in mind??"

Heeeee, I'm always up for steampunk anything, and it would be a *perfect* way for L to keep tabs on ye SA.

"I need you to plant something in Tsuzuki and Mia's office," L tells Ryuk. "Something small and difficult to detect. It's very rare, so it must be impossible for them to find."

"Heh, what is it? If I can find a small enough crack in a ceiling moulding or a light fixture or something, I could wedge it in that," Ryuk says, thinking of all the possible hiding places too high up for people to find it, whatever it is.

L holds the item up daintily - it's an electret microphone, tiny, and wired to a confidential frequency, of course. It took him a while to salvage components to come up with this tiny thing, months, maybe a year, so he seems loath to part with it.

"This," he says, simply.

Ryuk hovers in closer, tilting his head as he eyes the thing. "Ooh, some kind 've spy thingum? I can plant that in a lamp. No one'll suspect anything, I bet," he says, grinning.

"Make sure that old bat can't find it, or see you," L adds, and he does of course mean Genkai. "She's a tricky one."

"The tough ol' granny with the pink hair? I'll keep an eye out for her," he says. Then an idea crosses his mind and his head pops up. "Oooh! There's a ventilation grate thingy with a little trap on it: I can stick it in there." Meaning one of those ornate grates seen in the ceilings of some Victorian-style houses, designed to vent the warmth of the lower room into the one above (typist has fond childhood memories of listening through one of these in her maternal grandmother's house).

L nods, and offers Ryuk an apple-based piece of hard candy.

"That's my boy."

"Yum! You got good taste, L," Ryuk says, taking the candy, then sniffing it with delight before pocketing it. "I'll save that for later: I got a bug to plant first."
