Little Iris Lane's Profile 1

Jul 15, 2016 00:03

Dear friend,
I write to you because there is no one else.
I've made it to the city. The people here are different. They're different because they stand as if there's no time to be wasted on their watches. I'm starting to study the ways of this place. I'm starting to stand with their same impatience, but it doesn't feel right. At least not in practice. I will keep trying, though. Because I love the theory that this is part of the recipe to make good use of one's time.

I hope I make it big here. I'll make something for myself. I never really thought more than a step ahead back home, but...I guess there might be something for me out here.

Signed: Iris.

Iris writes letters to a ''friend''. There are hints in the letters that this ''friend'' has no specific identity. Iris never really asks them about themselves. It's more like a confession. She eventually admits to someone that she writes letters to herself.

-------------------------------------------------------------

Iris had a ''boyfriend'' back home who died. She is paralyzed when faced with all opportunity for love.
------------------------
Iris's parents have never had a large presence in her life. She is asked twice in the novel where her parents are. ''They have never had a large presence in my life.'' Is her pre-prepared answer.
----------------------

Iris's biggest problem is that she lives through the lives of others. She is a great observer, but not a girl of action. She observes the gangsters who live across from Rock. She observes Raymond. She observes Conor. She is fascinated with them both. In some way, she is in love with them. sHE IS CAPABLE of interacting, to some extent. She even observes Rock.

----
she sees at each bar a no-faced girl silougette hidden behind a cloud of smoke. a symbol for her other self.
