Echoing the above statement, Gackt is often regarded as "non-Japanese", and most people definitely think he's weird. He's... very well known, and quite often on TV, but that's not really the same as him being popular.

Basically, most people just think he's a bit funny/weird. It's not easy (depending on who you know, I guess) to find anyone who likes (or will admit to liking) him.

Most of his fans seem to be the really devoted type. Definitely none of my junior high students would EVER say they like Gackt (they find it hilarious I do) but maybe some senior high would. Either way, his fans tend to be older.

Just in my experience though~

the weirdness is deliberate, i thought? i mean, i thought it made him more popular, coz he talks about it ALL the time on those talk shows...
and is it his music, which is regarded as non-japanese? or overall persona?

Perhaps, though personally I do think he is just genuinely strange too. And I don't think his weird personality makes him popular - but it does help make him famous.

And it's him, his personality, that's regarded as non-Japanese (which is kind of ironic, considering how nationalistic he is), but his music is not exactly mainstream.

It's interesting, if ever a Japanese person finds out I like Gackt, the response is always nervous laughter and, "...why? ...do you think he's handsome?" - they never consider it could be the music!

i personally got hooked to his music before i found out what he looked like...and his music is the most important aspect of him, for me. but i can see how his amazing good looks may overshadow everything else -thats why maybe people say - 'u like gackt? coz he's good looking?" - i guess.
so many people have talked about the "nervous laugh" - LOL!!! - i find that really interesting (somehow it makes dear gakkun seem even more appealing to me!!! but then i guess i'm weird ...we ALL ARE!!! yayy!!)

the first pic I ever saw of him (before I heard him sing) was...not flattering. like..at all. x_x then I heard the voice that came out of that man's mouth and I was done for.

the first i ever saw is the takano yuri CM where he pulls out the female from the water - i was like O_O !!! can anyone be that beautiful (and i didn't mean the girl, obviously lol!).
but his wikipedia pic does not do him much justice...and that's the first place people look to get basic info abt anything/person right? i wish they'd change it...

Anyone can edit a wiki article, right? So why don't you change it? =D

you think that hadn't occured to me :) ? the MYV pic is also (almost) hideous. but i found out that there are copyright issues when it comes to a pic (you have to "own" the pic, or something) and you need to be a member of wikipedia - i don't wanna join wikipedia, ROFL, look what has happened when i joined livejournal, my first ever post at this community has got a tsunami of responses!! my email is teetering under the weight of it all, lol, not that i'm complaining!!
and on IMDB, on the bunraku page, gackt's name is listed on the 8th position, with no pic and no biodata, simply - japanese musician and actor - or something rather nonchalant like that! its totally shameful, and it made me angry but i'm not gonna do anything about it coz one needs to JOIN imdb to make changes, ROFL...

i had the same experience. the first time i saw him, i wasn't as struck by his beauty as i am now ^___^

but when i heard his voice, i fell in love...so to speak...
the range of his voice and the emotion behind it is what's absolutely amazing about him!

i've been a fan for about 6 years, and i know i'm going to follow him through the rest of his career, whether he retires or, according to gackt, drops dead (he pushes himself too much)

enough ranting i think, lol

You had it better. When I first saw him, I just thought that he had shiny hair. Yes, shiny. *dies of shame*

Same here. All the Japanese people that come to my house ask the exact same thing! (My family does a foreign exchange thing with a Japanese company). I usually just say, "yeah, sure whatever XD".
I honestly thought he was a lady when I first saw him. XD And then I just sort of cast him aside and went on with life. Then my friend introduced me to his music. It was Last Song that did it for me. XD

I'm largely a lurker here but I got exactly that reaction from a couple of Japanese kids I was taking around my city! They were sort of bewildered when I said (and held back the gushing about) his voice/music. Then they asked if I liked his looks which sort of made slightly more sense to them XD

this is something that always confused me- do they think it's hilarious because he's simply too weird/threatening for mainstream Japanese entertainment it or is it hilarious because it's like admitting you like Yanni or Michael Bolton?

Haha, the latter I think. Since most of them probably aren't familiar with his music - or if they have heard some, it'll be the recent mainstream singles like used for Kamen Rider etc.

Though actually, one little boy in a 5th grade elementary class, upon hearing I like Gackt, burst spontaneously into a rendition of 'Jesus'. :p
