but the wind is gusting up to 40-50 mph in the mountains where the fire continues to rage. a local firefighter lost his life and three of his fellow firefighters are burned. our local independent tv station had a crew near Julian (a picturesque, popular mountain community built many years ago, primarily of wood, and known for its apples, apple pie, and, my personal favorite, cinnamon ice cream for that delicious pie). anyway this camera crew was following a fire truck out to safety when they were surrounded by high walls of fire on both sides of the road. the photojournalist filmed the fire crew as they backed out and turned around to go in the other direction. this, apparently, is the strike team that was later overcome by flames. don't know how the camera crew got out. the julian downtown continues to be threatened by winds moving through the canyons (the firefighters call the canyons hell holes). the air quality is much improved as the wind is blowing the smoke and ashes and fire to the east, over the mountains, and into the desert.
concentration on work is difficult.
