Joseph Joubert is a king among men. I cannot believe that, until now, I have lived my life oblivious of his notebooks... That sounds like such an overstatement, but I absolutely loved the excerpts of his which have been published in our textbook. So, I thought for this week's entry, I would answer Question 2 pertaining to Joubert.

I know what you mean - I take a lot of time to think about what I'm writing in emails and in comments before sending them, often with a lot of revision involved. But I get sick of it sometimes - having to manage what image of myself I'm presenting, organising the knowledge I have of the other person to figure out what they'll focus on and what they will get from what I've said, as opposed to what I meant. And then I always end up reading back what I've written after it's been sent and thinking I got it all wrong in the end anyway.

But I'm not entirely sure I agree about the written word being more important than what we say. Given what I do, and what you do when you write (thinking carefully about what's to be said), doesn't it strike you that we might be editing out some truths even while we try to write truthfully? I know I do. Often I blurt out something meaningful before I've managed to censor it. Maybe you're just the opposite to me!
