bright and bold - G - Merlin - 100 words
They are rebuilding Camelot, beginning anew.
For the merlin100 prompt "beginnings."

Merlin licks his lips and swallows the lump in his throat. It hasn’t been long since his last swig of water, but he feels as though he’s dying.

He keeps his mind focused on the ground; he can feel Arthur’s eyes on him from afar. Concentrate, he thinks. He squeezes his eyes shut: the words of the spell fall off his tongue like dry leaves that scratch across the flagstones.

Finally, tufts of grass pop out of the ground, slowly brightening the landscape, covering the rubble of Camelot with new life.

This is how they begin again. Rough, but sure.

to life again - G - Gaius - 200 words
Gaius' heart stops when Merlin's stops. He must bring them both back to life.
Written in response to rewatching "The Poisoned Chalice" for the first time in a while. Wrote it a while back and haven't edited it since.

When Gaius realizes he may need to use magic to revive Merlin, he sends Gwen out, his heart throbbing in his chest. He hasn’t used magic in the longest time. Which spell, which spell can save him? Wait, wait - and the first word he utters tastes strange on his tongue. These words are ancient in the history of man; they are ancient to Gaius’s own mind. He wipes away the dust, glancing at Merlin-who-is-too-young-to-die, and finally (finally) remembers which spell, which spell; remembers the words and how they feel as they slide off the tongue, delicate as life itself. The antidote bubbles in response. It’s the most warming sight he’s seen in a long time.

He administers the antidote to Merlin and hopes, hopes, and his heart beats, beats. When a moment passes and Merlin isn’t breathing, Gaius presses his ear to Merlin’s chest, eyes shut tight. He hears nothing. Gaius leans back, proclaiming Merlin dead, and his own heart stops beating, beating in his chest. He feels unbelievably empty as he wraps his arms around Gwen. His ancient magic has failed Merlin, his dusty mind has failed Merlin - and when Arthur went to such lengths to save him.
