Today I'd like to extend my wishes for a solemn, reflective Memorial Day to all my friends from the United States!
I confess, it almost slipped my mind that this Monday was Memorial Day. I had been intending to send out my prison care package today, but of course, there's no mail service in the US on this holiday, so it will have to wait until tomorrow. If you'd like to double check the care package list, you can find the updated version
here. All prisoners should be receiving their items sometime this week. I've also thrown in some extra candies for all.
[A personal note to Ms. Paups: I meant to send you some Cohdopian recipes before, as you asked for them, but then it completely slipped my mind! Therefore, I am sending you a cookbook. Traditional Cohdopian cuisine is quite delicious, in my opinion. I hope you'll agree!]
We don't celebrate any holiday in Cohdopia on this date. However, we do have a similar holiday, which is celebrated on January 19th: Brenthis Ino Day!
Brenthis Ino is one of Cohdopia's most colorful historical figures. Statesman, poet, essayist, diplomat, soldier, renowned wit--there were few roles Mr. Ino didn't play in his lifetime. In fact, he is one of Cohdopia's most well known novelists, thanks to his only novel, the delightful Undchen ahr Paathmin (a charming fantastical fable about a girl and her cat), which unfortunately has never been translated into English, or else I would certainly stock copies of it here at the gift shop.
Brenthis Ino, though a soldier, was also a great proponent of peace. Sadly, he died in the last Civil War, at the relatively young age of 47, but his death, which grieved all those who were involved in the conflict, is often credited with bringing about an end to the hostilities. Leaders from both sides attended Mr. Ino's funeral.
Brenthis Ino Day is celebrated on the 19th of January because that was the day that marked the end of the Civil War, shortly after his death. It is a day for honoring all those Cohdopians who gave their lives, their health, or their service for the greatness of their country. It is also a day on which we hope for a lasting peace, amongst ourselves, and with the other nations of this world, so that no more need make such weighty sacrifices.
So again, a very thoughtful Memorial Day to one and all!
No coupon today, as it doesn't seem to be in the spirit of this sober holiday, but I will certainly be posting another one soon. We are currently honoring all previously posted online coupons at the embassy.
Yours Sincerely,
Colias Palaeno,
Ambassador of Cohdopia
