Fangasm

Oct 09, 2013 20:28

Despite having zero free time and scary upcoming exam, I just mainlined Fangasm in two days, which I seem to always do here. There isn't much to do on the rock other than study and play Minesweeper, so whenever I give myself permission to have some new TV show/book/whatever, it ends up a marathon experience.

Various thoughts )

to be completely honest, i don't want to know what the cast and crew really think of the fans and the fic, but other fangirls' fannish experiences could be really interesting. especially since fandom as it filters into the wider mainstream is usually positioned as something teenage (or preteen) girls do, and adult women are expected to be interested in more "mature" kinds of things. so that part of the book sounds pretty neat.

and yes, you do want to go to wincon. :D

Yeah, I kinda wanted to know, for as long as it's presented in a printed version and I don't have to watch the recording of it live. They sounded very friendly toward the fans as most of them are fans of something. The fannish experience really was the most interesting part - about being judges for it and about learning not to be ashamed of what you enjoy. But they do ask quite a few people about fic and explain wincest and RPF to them, so watch out. Can't say anything about RPF (not into it), but I didn't like their explanation for wincest. They basically compare it to lesbian porn for women - hey, two hot men, let's watch them make out! And I really, really disagree, but that's gotta be just a personal take on the ship.

Wincon >.< And it's in Vegas this year! Gaaah! (When is it, by the way?)

"it's like lesbian porn for women" is a quick&easy way to explain the appeal of m/m fic - i mean, "straight guys stereotypically like watching two hot women together" is a familiar reference point - but it does kind of make slash fans sound like shallow, horny folks who are only in it for the porn. and it's a little more complicated than that. well, i think it is. fanficcers who just like to rub two hot guys together to make sparks might disagree. and honestly, if that's all you want out of your m/m pairing (wincest or rps or whatever), that's kind of boring.

this year wincon was in vegas, which is like disney for adults, and next year it's in orlando, which is just disney. yay?

Yeah, I think that was the best explanation to present to outsiders - quick, easy and least cringe-worthy. It totally is boring, though, and untrue for a lot of people (myself included).

Aaaah, read your Wincon report and was seized by fits of jealousy. And it was in Vegas, too! How awesome is that? Yeah, Orlando... If I get unlucky next year and land in Miami for my 5th semester, that would be perfect (except how fuck that, I don't want to go to Florida for a whole semester). Otherwise, the list of cities that get visiting priority due to great people living there is pretty long. Whaa! One day.

the solution to this is clearly to get hired by a hospital in the continental us and then win the lottery. (i wouldn't want to spend a semester in miami either. southern florida is god's waiting room. it's where new york jews go to die.)
