Every Queen Needs A King?

Alice ports into the Nexus and finds herself a comfortable couch to sit on. She's frowning, looking rather annoyed (and possibly worried) about something. Once she's seated, she pulls out her cards and starts shuffling them, mostly to have something to do with her hands. "What is the best way to distract someone from talking about marriage?" she ( Read more... )

Mordred walks over, looking Alice over. A girl? Why would someone that young be brought to the Nexus? It doesn't matter that much to him, though. She has a question. Was that the only requirement?

Hell, Mordred's bored. He's fine with answering the question of this child. "I'd suggest that you simply divert her attention to something else. If she brings up marriage, talk about a fault of hers. If that doesn't work, make yourself entirely repulsive to any potential suitors."

Yes, a girl, and Alice doesn't think of herself as a child. She's 18 now -- technically, she's a young woman. Hence the whole talk about marriage. "Oh, I've made some attempts -- tried to get her talking about her new dress patterns or hats or her friends. . . ." Alice shakes her head. "I was just wondering if anyone had any other suggestions." Then she smirks. "As for making myself repulsive, I don't need to work on that. Not many young men would fancy a girl who was in bedlam."

Mordred simply raises an eyebrow at that last remark. A girl who was in bedlam...he didn't want to know why she was there. He really didn't want to know. "Well, sorry I couldn't be much help. What not to do for marriage was never really a problem for me." By virtue of him not being married yet.

And Alice doesn't particularly want to talk about it. Everybody's happy. "Oh, that's fine," Alice tells him, picking out a card from her pile and flipping it between her fingers. "It's a rather specific question, isn't it? If you've never had the problem. . . ." She amuses herself by making the card vanish and reappear. "How can you know how to answer it?"

"I find that once an older female relative takes an interest in talking about marriage, it's a little hard to distract her," says a woman in a fifties era nurse's uniform. She gives Alice a sympathetic smile. "You could try engaging yourself in some activities -- school or charities, perhaps. Claim you are too busy for suitors at this time."

"I've noticed that too," Alice nods, sighing. She looks thoughtful. "Having something to engage myself in would be nice. I'm not sure what I could do, though. I know there's a sewing circle, but I don't like doing that for fun." She rolls her eyes a little. "No matter how much Aunt Susan hints I should."

"I don't like sewing much, either," Sarah agrees. "Do you cook or bake at all? I find a plate of cookies a much more satisfying result than a sampler."

Alice shakes her head. "No -- but you certainly have a point there. Maybe I should learn." She suddenly laughs. "Well, to tell the truth, I should have the ability to feed myself in case I fulfill Aunt Susan's horrible nightmares and end up a spinster."

"IN SUCH AWKWARD MOMENTS, I WOULD SUGGEST LEAVING THE ROOM."

Alice starts a little at the sheer loudness of the voice. She manages to recover herself after a moment, though. "I suppose I should -- but I wonder if she might just chase me around the house. Or at least lecture me again on my manners."

She's not his Alice. He's not her Hatter. But she's an Alice, and he's a Hatter, and maybe that counts for something. For a few minutes, he simply watches the cards in her hands, his head tilted to one side, perched on the arm of a nearby chair. Whether or not her question registers in his poor, mad mind is up for debate.

"I do like a good mystery."

It certainly does -- Alice is always interested in meeting alternates of her friends. That said, it's not a guarantee that she'll recognize him as a Hatter right away. Though she does note that there seems to be something a bit familiar about him. Hmmm. "I'm glad one of us does," she says, rolling her eyes slightly. "Normally I don't mind a good puzzle or riddle myself. But then again, they don't usually involve the idea of me getting married. Or my aunt talking about it at length." She glares at a card, as if it's the cause of all her troubles.

He brightens considerably at the mention of riddles. There haven't been nearly enough in his life, not since the Queen took over and March defected to royal teatimes. With a bright grin he scrambles down off the chair and approaches slowly, his hands clasped together in front of him. "Have you got any riddles?" he asks, hopeful. "I had one, you see, here in my pocket, but it's run away."

Alice blinks briefly. "You lost a--"

Wait a minute. Now she's starting to realize what's familiar about him. He doesn't act exactly like hers, nor exactly like that other, brighter-colored one she met on her first visit, but. . . "By any chance," she starts slowly, "is your name Hatter?" Oh, she hopes it is, she likes meeting Hatters.

Moriarty shrugs. He hardly sees his family any more, and doesn't particularly care one way or the other what they think.

"A friend of mine escaped an unpleasant family by running off to join the military and moving to London once his service had ended. Rather foolhardy, in my opinion, but it worked nonetheless..."

He blinks, regarding Alice carefully.

"It seems, however, that such advice would hardly be relevant in this situation."

Alice arches an eyebrow and grins slightly. "I'm afraid not," she nods. "Not the least because I don't think the military would have me, being of the wrong sex and all." She flips a card between her fingers. "They're hardly unpleasant most of the time," she adds. "I get along with Aunt Susan pretty well. It's just -- I don't think I'm ready to think of marriage yet. I'm a bit young still." And the asylum's still in the very recent past.

"I've told Aunt Susan I think I'm too young yet," Alice says. "But I don't think she listens. Or she just goes on about how she and my uncle married when she was just a year older than me." She rolls her eyes a bit. "I think it just comes from her worrying about me. She doesn't want me to end up alone, I'm sure. Uncle Charles doesn't seem to have an opinion on the subject, at least not yet."
