There's a table in the Nexus that is perfectly suited for Ryan's purposes. It's just the right size so that he looks impressive, rather than dwarfed, sitting behind it. He's very comfortable in an arm chair he's managed to pull up to one side of it and he's currently practicing his shuffling. Each time it's more elaborate, more flashy - at least ( Read more... )

Hey, Ryan. There's another Ryan in the Nexus, and he's watching you shuffle cards. "Considering that when things just happen to me, they usually aren't good, I wouldn't mind knowing what to expect." He points to the jar. "What're the donations for?"

The more Ryan's the better. "Would you like me to tell you?" he offers, innocently. Then, matter-of-fact, "Starving children."

"You can do that?" he asks, surprised and a little nervous. Hypothetical future-telling is one thing, actually being able to do it is another.

He looks at the jar again, then shrugs and pulls out his wallet. "I hope my money is good." He pulls out a couple bucks and puts it in the jar. "I'm from a late twentieth century United States." The truth is, he's a sucker for kids, so a kid asking money to help starving kids is like a double whammy.

"Sure thing." Ryan shuffles the cards in his hands, then carefully sets the deck on the table. "With this,"he taps the deck, which appears to be your basic, average, everyday 52 card deck. "I can tell you about your past, your present and your future."

The sight of the money is even more encouraging to the boy - mostly because the "starving child" he's talking about is himself. "Yeah, s'all good."

"Nope. Not knowing what's going to happen is a lot more interesting. Probably not as depressing, either. Going with the flow is my kind of thing." J slips his hands into his pockets and watches the shuffling. "As long as the flow suits me, of course."

Ryan sighs heavily, halving the deck and shuffling each half separately before combining them once more. "I suppose you have a point..."

"Besides you'll only go and do something that'll change the future. Or someone else will. Guaranteed. How much do you want?"

"Which is why I deal in vague fortunes that could mean anything." Ryan absently deals the cards out, three piles of three. "Enough for dinner'd be nice."

If my partner sees a vision of the future, we use it. We're not big on just letting events roll over us.

Your partner sees visions?

Yep. He's a precog, a seer. That's what they do. I read minds, and he sees the future. The older he gets, the further ahead he's getting to see.

Oh...can you control it.

Quint checks his pockets for change almost reflexively at the sight of the jar, answering as he does so. "I've been through something like that once already, and it wasn't very pleasant. Mostly, I'd rather not know and just take life as it comes. But, if something bad was going to happen, and knowing would mean I could do something to change it, well... I've been through that once, I could do it again if I had to."

The jar ends up gaining a silver Morgan dollar, a 5-zenny piece, two Canadian 'loonie' dollar coins, and an old British tuppence. Quint worldhops a bit.

That is...possibly the most eclectic and interesting donation he's received thus far. Ryan sincerely hopes he can redeem it somewhere - because, naturally, the charity he's benefiting is himself.

"Well, what if someone could tell you?" he asks - purely rhetorically, of course. "Just...give you an idea what's coming up?"

He should have seen the glow-in-the-dark coin Quint found under some Nexus Couch Cushions once!

"One of my siblings is precognitive. He doesn't talk about it too much, but if he knew something dangerous was going to happen he'd let us know. Then I'd try to find out more if I could."

"Pre...cognitive?" Ryan blinks a few times, surprised. "Seriously?"

Persephone's not going to attempt any sort of help with the cards -- it would end like the map, disaster on wheels. Instead, she cocks her head, considering the question.

"I'd rather know. I mean, I already know bits as it is, but that way I could try to change it. Make it better."

Ryan can totally handle the cards. Mostly. He just has trouble every...once in a while.

"Want me to tell you?"

"You can actually tell me my future?" Persephone grins, amused. The timeline of her pantheon is so convoluted, she's curious if he can actually do it.

The goddess pulls up a decidedly less impressive chair than Ryan's and waits.

"And your past and present, if you'd like."

He smiles, dealing three piles of three cards each, face-down. "Your call."
