Professor Yana's in the Nexus again.  He's been here off and on since last we saw him, flitting about with handheld doohickies that flash and spin and beep, and frowning at them a fair amount in the process.  Unfortunately, not much about the apparently paradoxical nature of the place has registered with his equipment, from the far, far future ( Read more... )

It is a shame that he doesn't have any doohickies with him today, because the Doctor loves doohickies, especially ones that spin, beep, or flash. However, the Doctor also loves talking to people, which fortunately can still happen regardless of the lack of doohickies.

So, "Yes," he replies from the nearby couch he happens to be seated upon. "Though, usually that happens when I've got amnesia, so I'm not entirely certain if that applies or not."

Yana loves them too! And he's good with them, even if his tend to be cobbled together from scrap and staples and nutrient bars. It pays to have an assistant who doesn't need external sustenance. Maybe some other time, and he and the Doctor can do science squee together.

A faint frown wrinkles his brow when the Doctor appears, the itch of something in the back of his mind alongside the drums, but Yana shrugs it off easily enough. The comment about amnesia prompts an incredulous little chuckle, and he gives him a curious sort of look. 'When you've got amnesia. Is that a common affliction for you?'

The Doctor shrugs. "It didn't use to be, but recently it would seem my mind is especially slippery." He grins at Yana. This man seems somewhat interesting. His question definitely piques the Doctor's curiosity, as recognizing things and people for no reason at all isn't something that happens frequently.

"I take it then though that you often go through the situation you described?"

The Doctor's grin seems something like contagious, and Professor Yana feels a bit of a smile twitching around his own lips in response. That something continues tickling in the back of his mind- apropos to this conversation, perhaps- some meaning attached to the smile other than simple friendliness.

'Oh, not often,' he waves the words away like bothersome insects, a bit of bluster to his tone, as if to suggest that such an idea is nothing less than errant nonsense. 'Just- well, just since I encountered the Nexus. Certain words, certain people... I don't suppose I could even tell you which, but it's certainly there. Damned frustrating thing, really.'

Reality has been altered around me so many times that when it happens I just shrug it off nowadays.

For example, we have a group we tangle with called "The Restorers", supposedly refugees from realities that no longer exist. Every fiber of my being tells me I'm supposed to know them outside of their group affiliation, but for the life of me I can't remember.

The Professor is a man of science, intensely curious- almost greedily so- about everything, the idea of just shrugging something like that off rather rankles at him. He himself is forced to drop questions now and again, simply in the interest of practicality, but he never likes it.

He frowns, just slightly. 'But surely, my dear, does that not bother you?'

Kerry just sighs a bit. "If not for the fact that I've come to terms with the loss of my own indiginous reality, I'd be a Restorer myself. I've had to deal with basically a 'deja vu squared' for about the last 23 years. Imagine seeing people you know, and have concrete memories of, but at the same time they're different, because they're not the ones you *really* know--"

Kerry stops in mid sentence and gathers her thoughts. "I'm just rambling now... erf... But to answer the question, it happens so often that it's more of an annoyance than a real bother."

Well well well, this is a chap who hasn't been found wandering around here lately. The Doctor, that is. At least, this particular Doctor. In fact, last he was here he might very well have been in his eleventh. Wibbly wobbly...

"You could say that," if Yana isn't too busy being listless or, you know, slightly brilliant he might notice this pinstriped tentpeg is looking at him rather intently, "Then, I have been around the block more than a few times. You know, I was chatting to a lovely lady the other day. Joan of Arc. Long story short, I thought she was someone else, made an ill-timed pass and she tried to castrate me with a broadsword."

He pauses, though not for breath, and scratches the back of his head, "Actually, that's not really the same scenario at all, is it?"

He's generally a man prone to distraction, but the Professor does notice the strange intensity of the Doctor's gaze. At least, he does, until the aforementioned pinstriped tentpeg starts on about castration via Joan of Arc. Not that he has any idea who Joan of Arc is, of course; that particular bit of ancient history is long forgotten by his time.

He chuckles, both amused and slightly taken aback. 'Not really, no. It is certainly an interesting story, however; it does have that much going for it.' Yana pauses, crooking an eyebrow at the Doctor. 'I trust you escaped that particular, unpleasant fate?'

"Oh, yes. Eventually. The shock of a woman on a mission from God coming at me with several pounds worth of iron sent my vocal register above high c, turns out that was enough to convince her I already was, uh, you know--"

The Doctor clears his throat and resumes that curious stare, "So, what exactly is it you think you're supposed to recognise?"

The way the Doctor obviously and awkwardly trails off is enough to make him laugh- not particularly loudly, but it's a proper, genuine laugh- and something about him suggests that he hasn't occasion to laugh like that for a damn long time. 'Poor chap,' he chortles. 'That sounds like... something of an ordeal.'

He falls silent, though, at the Doctor's look, which rather suggests he's got a question or two himself. When he speaks, though, Yana can only shrug helplessly. 'God only knows, I'm afraid. As for this poor old man- I haven't a clue.'

A fellow who is not at all as young as he looks, pauses and turns blind eyes toward Yana.

"Yes. Always. History repeats itself and I have seen much of it. Too much to remember, but I hear echoes everywhere."

Well. That's an answer he hadn't expected, and Professor Yana blinks repeatedly as he attempts to construct something that might come close to an appropriate response. 'Do you indeed? And that would make you what, my dear man? An Eternal? Angel, devil, Divergent? And I thought I'd seen everything here.'

"An Eternal is appropriate enough." Albion smiles a little. He likes this man, and his gentle voice.

"Do you experience much memory loss?"

'Well, well, then. A pleasure to make your acquaintance, I'm sure.' An Eternal. Another one of the old myths, one Yana had never really believed. Why would he, after all? He's a man of science; he has little time for such inventions, though he doesn't disdain them. They are merely... for other people, who need different brands of hope.

At the question, his brow wrinkles thoughtfully. 'Memory loss? No, not as such... More, well, the feeling that things ought to be familiar when I know of no reason that they should be.'

"Constantly. But I think that has more to do with my lack of memory rather than anything else," Michael supplied simply after mulling over it for a few moments. "Any particular reason you are asking such a question?"

'Well, naturally,' Yana answers with a touch of good natured impatience. 'It's hardly a rhetorical question, is it?'

veritasjusticia April 13 2009, 03:19:36 UTC
Michael was mildly amused. "No, but it is not as though the subject matter is all that concrete a thing to study. Are you researching deja vu, or are you experiencing bouts of it?"

'No,' he concedes with a faintly apologetic smile. 'The latter, I'm afraid. I'm a scientist, not a psychologist; I know little about the workings of the mind.'
