This time there’s no portal. Cronus simply appears near the sign, and takes the nearest convenient armchair to lounge in. For a minute or so he simply regards the Nexus with an air of strained patience ( Read more... )

"Determination, I'd say." Hi Cronus! Have a Dragon-God.

"And Yourself, sir? What's Your prime determinant?" He has His own hypotheses, naturally, but the Changer's answer should be most enlightening.

Well, hello there! It's not often he meets a fellow god he doesn't have a grudge against!

"An essential character trait? Interesting." He considers his answer for a second or two. "Personally, I find it so difficult to narrow down... but my personal history comes to mind."

If recent events hadn't thrown things into question, he would have had an immediate answer.

Aww, did He piss off the Norse pantheon as well? Zhil hopes not, as Those guys know how to party.

"Well, I would imagine so. But then, aren't We all defined by Our pasts? Even the mortals are of similar wise in that respect. But what is that key factor that drives you on, the one that determines who You are? It's a tricky question, I know."

Not that Zhil knows about recent events, of course. They oft have a way of muddling things, don't they?

Well, it's unlikely, since Cronus hasn't run into any of them in person yet. But it's hard to keep track of everyone you've pissed off in the course of nearly destroying the world once a week. He certainly hasn't got anything against them.

"Not when you've had four thousand years to contemplate it." He leans on the arm of his chair. "What drives me is quite simple, my friend. The desire to be restored to my rightful place. To destroy those who would stand in my way. To take my revenge."

They do indeed, especially when temporary amnesia is involved.

Zhil should introduce them sometime! He's sure Cronus and Loki would get along splendidly. (So long as He remembered to never, ever accept a drink from a Trickster.) And He could always go hunting frost giants with Thor! Who doesn't love a good frost giant hunt, eh?

"Ah, yes. The whole 'deposed by One's children' thing. I've always felt bad for the Grecian patricidal cycle; it seems like such a waste. Still, I'll be happy to wish You the best of luck from the sidelines!"

...Waitasec. "Although I admit to curiosity. What of those who had no culpability in Your fall? Vengeance on Your offspring, fair enough... but what of Their children? Would Your descendants share Their parents' fate?"

Oooh man, selective amnesia is a bitch! Luckily, it never seems to last all that long.

Someone who isn't Cronus, that's for sure! (Though it's true Cronus seems to enjoy setting giants loose just as much. He's fickle like that.)

"Yes, well, rest assured I wasn't intending to start a tradition with that..."

Cronus raises his eyebrows at the question, and waves a hand. "Oh, I'm not interested in most of them...." and his voice darkens quite impressively, "or I wouldn't be, if they weren't doing their best to hinder me now."

Luckily, no! Still, better not to start a water fight on the banks of the Lethe in future, divine powers of regeneration or not.

It makes for an endless cycle of fun!

"Mmm, the whole 'baby-eating' thing, yes. What is to be done when One's wife is misleading?"

Zhil nods, considering judiciously. "I trust You're allowing for incumbent sycophantism? I daresay a few of Them are only messing about to stay in Your youngest's good graces, and would transfer Their loyalty (such as it is) over to a victorious Titan with little to no qualms."

Zhil will take a note of that! It seems an important and useful lesson.

"Hmmmm." He looks away and moves on, expression sour. Sorry, Zhil. Apparently we... don't talk about Rhea.

"I'm sure you're right about that. And I'm not an unreasonable god, after all. I'll be happy to hear out their offers, before my ascension or after... that is, if they survive it." Which is kind of the catch.

One Cronus won't ever forget again.
