"So. Um." He has a deer-in-the-headlights look to him. Oh, my. Wasn't there a way to do this without actually having to encounter and talk to people? That floating screen person had the right idea

"There's this notion," Cecilia begins, sorting through the deluge of words (though she thinks they're good words! Philosophical questions are her very favorite kind) thoughtfully, "In Christianity, particularly, that no one is ever really good. Which sounds depressing, but it doesn't mean they're bad, either; what it basically means is everyone starts on the same level and some people aspire to be good harder than others. The payoff is in the trying--so yes, I think deeds are important, but keeping yourself from the bad things, to be black and white about it, is maybe more so."
She takes a breath, and smiles, briefly. "I don't really believe in 'little' lives. Some people have a more obvious sphere of influence, but that's all it is: obvious."
Oh, yes, no one can talk like Metody. It was near constant, but at least he listens. "I can see the comfort in that. Once you know you're going to - " He hesitates, unsure if he's actually allowed to curse here. "Well. There. You can do what's right without thought of the personal consequence. That'd be nice."
He pulls a bag of caramels from his bookbag and takes one, then offers the baggie to her. "You have to admit that there are people whose actions touch literally thousands, if not millions."
"It would," she agrees, and then regards the caramels with some surprise. She knows what they are, she's just...never had one, being from the cult of ballet (it's totally a cult, okay, especially the way she does it). "I've never had these before--"
--but she's still totally taking one. The Nexus is full of new and interesting things, might as well try a couple of them! "Thanks. And yeah, that's true, but it seems like...I don't know, everyone touches everyone, whether they know it or not. Those people had to get where they are because of so-called 'little' lives. Everyone is reliant on everyone else."
She pauses to om nom nom some caramel here, because she is a lady (...mostly) and knows not to chew with her mouth open. Also, because she's formulating a response, in her cautious, calculated fashion.
"Without their community, they'd be nothing...I just don't think any one person is more important than the next. Although we don't have a lot of superheroes or supervillains, where I'm from, so maybe it's different in those places."
While Cecilia isn't actually sure she believes that, she figures it's only fair to allow for discrepancies between universes, given how the Nexus works. Although philosophical notions tend to stay constants, she's noticed!
"We don't really have super villains in mine, either. I think the closest we've got are major criminals or trouble-raisers, or sometimes political leaders. And we really don't have any super heroes - pushing back at the darkness tends to be done as part of an organization, like the cops, or certain armies. But I do think some people end up being more important, if only because they're the hinge in making a decision that effects many, many lives."
"Maybe." Cecilia toys with the cross around her neck, lower lip momentarily caught between her teeth. It's something that warrants further consideration, she decides, but...later. "I think I've just met too many people who think ostensible societal importance means they're entitled to a lot of privileges."
Which is aggravating, judging by the look on her face.
He grimaces. "That...I can see it to a certain extent, I guess. Maybe. Every position of responsibility I've been in has meant more aggravation than anything else - I can certainly understand the desire for greater reward for greater work."
She takes a breath, and smiles, briefly. "I don't really believe in 'little' lives. Some people have a more obvious sphere of influence, but that's all it is: obvious."
