"So.  Um."  He has a deer-in-the-headlights look to him.  Oh, my.  Wasn't there a way to do this without actually having to encounter and talk to people?  That floating screen person had the right idea ( Read more... )

This jackal seems to be paying an inordinate amount of attention to what Metody is saying, the way animals can despite the fact they're probably thinking about food. He scratches himself behind the ear with his hind food, oddly thoughtful, then simply flops over onto his side.

"I dunno, you seem okay to me," he says at this junction.

"Y..." wait, what? What? For a moment he's quiet, staring at the...dog? Thing. Looks wild. Then he just gives up and resigns himself to this new way the Nexus has broken his brain.

"....yes. Ah. But lots of people seem okay at first. Not all that many people walk around randomly kicking kittens and eating babies. At least, I hope not."

Would it go amiss if he scratched the dog's head?

In fact, Ammit would be very pleased at scratchings! He 'subtly' stretches a little in Metody's direction to encourage such behavior.

"I eat bad people's hearts," he announces shiftily. It is entirely possible that if he had his way, he would be walking around perhaps not kicking kittens but definitely eating babies. A bit. A little bit! ... What, he gets hungry. "After Anpu weighs them against Truth, I dunno if that's the same thing as answering your questions, the tests you were talking about with food moneys. It's like answering all of them at once and then you go to the afterworld or possibly I eat you, you know how it goes."

He gives into the urges and scritches the dog's head. Those giant ears were just nifty - kind of like a fennec.

"Oh." For the sake of his sanity, he approaches it as a thought-experiment. He seems to be doing that a lot in the Nexus. "Just their hearts? Nothing else?" The heart seemed like a tough and unappetizing piece of meat. If he was going to eat a person, the first thing he'd go after would be the liver. Or maybe the marrow bones.

Aha, yes. Another victim of the ears. Ammit wags his tail a bit.

"Symbolic, yet delicious," he muses, also attempting to sneak a lick of Metody's hand in. "I guess it is for making people act good when they're still alive, so they do the right things in the scenarios you said, and maybe they don't know but it helps them be a good person. Also being a person lasts a while so it can change and stuff. Nobody's good all the time, that is a Truth, a fair Truth."

His hands taste like the salt of sweat, a trace of the sugary sweetness of a Coke slushy, and behind it all, clean bones.

"That's true. I don't think a person could be perfectly consistent and still be a person. Does it go off of time spent as a good person versus bad? I could easily see someone being basically decent their whole lives, except for one horrific misstep. Or does it go off of severity, with each sin and virtue having a value that gets stacked up and balanced?"

Long as the coyote-thing's mouth is near his hands, he tries rubbing at it's jaw.

He happily moves his head so as to aid this endeavor. Tail-wagging Devourer issa good boy! Good boy!

"I don't even know," Ammit says cheerfully, because it's not exactly his mortality on the line, "Anpu and Djehuty take care of that mostly, I think it also has a lot to do with how you feel about it, like, a lot of people could be nice but maybe did something big that was not good, and maybe they feel it outweighs everything... but maybe it doesn't, Truth is weird. If you felt bad, or if you tried to make up for what you did, you're all of that, not just what you once did."

"But how you feel about something doesn't change the fact of it. If I walk away later deeply regretting that I scratched your jaw, your jaw will still be scratched. And if I went out and killed someone, no matter how much I regretted and repented, that person would still be dead." His hands go in search for that spot that makes hind feet thump. "Oh. Want a caramel?"
