A viper pilot (who is beginning to wonder if she can even call herself such any more; two months is an eternity when it comes to the kind of reflexes flying as well as she does requires) walks into the Nexus, carrying an odd sword (one of these, in fact), which she toys with experimentally as she speaks ( Read more... )

Viper pilot, meet severely canonfucked Sailor Senshi. Or, in this case, a tiny, blue-haired girl who's obviously still high school-aged, even if the way she looks at Kara tells quite a different story - that's the sort of look you only get when you've survived more hell than a human being's meant to survive and you're never entirely sure why. She's just dressed in casual clothes today, which in this case means an orange vest over a white shirt and dark blue pants, and she gives the sword a quick, careful once-over. "A new hobby, huh?" She taps her hand against her side, for a moment. "I've never trained anyone in how to use a sword before . . . but I might have to, someday, so I could try?"

Kara looks the girl over with only the tiniest hint of skepticism; she knows that look too well not to recognize it in another. Besides, she'd started teaching people to fly when she wasn't long out of high school, herself. Age didn't reflect talent.

"Yeah, don't ask what my old one was," Kara replies, re: hobbies. Seriously, don't ask. "I'm a shitty student but a quick study, if that's any reassurance."

In Ami's case, age really was no reflection on talent - or suicidal resolve, but who keeps track of that particular characteristic, anyway?

You know, based on the tone of Kara's voice, Ami decides she really doesn't want to know. Really. She knows that expression, too. "That's fine. I'm not a very good teacher, but I get the job done when I have to." She smiles, a little self-deprecatingly. "But then, you can do a lot of things when you have to."

"Don't I know it," Kara replies, with a small sigh. "I was a teacher, once. I'm not about to criticize anyone else who tries."

Well, not to their face, anyway. But Kara carries a lot of guilt for having gotten one of her students killed, so no, she probably won't criticize either way.

"Thank you in advance, then," Ami says, nodding. "If you decide I'm worth wasting your time on, that is." She presses her lips together and laughs again, a quiet, nervous snort. She doesn't look like the sort of girl who ought to have those yes, nor necessarily act like it, but nevertheless, something in the tone of her voice shows the metaphorical age just as well as her eyes manage, too. "It's nice to meet you. My name is Mizuno Ami. And you are . . . ?"

"Trust me, I've wasted my time on a lot worse."

Kara instinctively likes this girl, even if she does end up choosing someone else for a teacher. Like calls to like, perhaps.

"Kara Thrace," she replies, and offers a hand for Ami to shake.

"Hello, Kara," Ami says, and takes the hand, giving it a short, firm tug exactly two times, before something registers in the back of her mind and she sighs. "Also, I apologize, I mistakenly gave my family name first. It's been some time since I had to think about that, but that's no excuse here. Please, call me Ami."

She laughs, then, somewhat cheerfully. "I'll take your word for it. I've had to train worse, though not with swords."

Just thinking of the time Usagi nearly impaled herself on a tree attempting a high-kick is enough to make Ami wince.
