There's a cat watching him - that was the agreement, to watch over Kai - and swishing his tail impatiently. Some of those conversations were more irritating than usual.

Well, yes, the one involving cat guts would probably leave a very bad taste in his mouth. >.>

Would Kai be able to spot the cat? Would he be reccognizable by scent?

Ooooooh yes. Hawkins still smelled faintly of rotting meat, and he was making no effort to hide the fact that he was watching Kai.

Which means there's nothing keeping Kai from walking over to where Hawkins is.

"Hey. If you're who I think you are... I heard about everything." Which isn't meant to mean anything particular, but Kai wants to make sure he knows who is watching him and is waiting for a reaction from Hawkins to confirm his suspicions.

"Well, that spoils my fun, mate," the cat finally commented. "What does everything mean in your book?"

"Well, maybe not everything. He didn't go into detail. He said you 'died' and came back as a talking cat." Kai may be summarizing at will here. "He said that there was a kind of deal where you don't get killed again if you behave. And that you'd be watching out for me." Not that Kai really thinks he needs it, and it may show in his tone.

Angry little tail twitching at the 'talking cat' part. "Being killed sucks, little wolf. Even if you don't need a cat-shaped shadow, it never hurts to have a mate at your back."

Even if they used to be a vicious zombie once. Ignore that part, Kai, he's being friendly!

"I guess you have a point..." And if anyone would know from experience how much being killed sucks, it would be Hawkins.

"So what've you been doing since?"

"The Nexus is very boring as a cat." That was very grumbly, that sentence. He flicked his head, sending the 'charm' around his neck clinking against the collar. "Catching mice, and watching a lot of boring humans complain about nothing."

"So what'd you do before you were a cat that you can't do now?" He sits down so that he's closer to eye level with Hawkins. "'Sides kill people, I mean."

"I didn't kill people a lot," Hawkins said defensively. "Most were already dead. I traveled around, mate. First the world, then the Nexus. Watched things happen. Humans are such odd creatures, thinking time is forever for them. I've seen so many die before they get what they think they want."

There was a pause. "And I didn't kill them, either."

Kai shrugged. "Didn't know how often you did it. It was just the only thing I could think of that you can't do now. But... there's still nothing keeping you from traveling now, is there?"

"Nothing worth doing it for, now." Hawkins grinned like only a cat could. "Trying to be rid of me, mate?"

Kai smiled back, amused. "Doubt it'd be that easy, even if I was trying."

"Right-o, don't want to be eaten again." Cheerful, that comment was. "What's with the question?"

"Oh, that." He shrugs, picking up a pencil that someone had dropped on the floor of the Nexus and tapping it idly. "All this time I've been traveling with Ginta and the rest we've been on our way to a new tribe, a new home for me and my brother. We're almost there and... I dunno. It'll be weird, getting used to a new pack. 'Specially after traveling with just a handful of people for so long."
