You know how some people are attractive, but just radiate wrong? That's what the new arrival does, but triple that. She's a Japanese schoolgirl (tentacles not included) with a weird fashion statement: a metal "collar" around her neck. And not the fun kind of collar, either. Nothing, if it's other people who don't belong to me. If it's people trying to kill me or people I like, I tend to take lethal exception to it.

But the problem with kill-or-be-killed going on 24 hours a day is that you don't have time or thought for anything other than immediate survival.

It wasn't an open declaration with explosive collars and a time limit before they exploded, but the weak were targeted and weeded out. Students who showed strength, ambition, a lack of conscience about human life, and the ability to kiss the right asses went on to longer lives and better positions with more security. We were encouraged to get rid of the people who couldn't handle it. Letting the weak live, let alone protecting them, was a sign of weakness that made you a target yourself.

Not as much fun as you might think. I'm much happier to be outside and catch a break now and then. Like you said, the killing and striving can get routine, monotonous.
