Passion will drive a good man insane. Dean knows this because he watched it happen to his father after that thing took his mother away. It's not that Dean believes his father has completely lost his grip on sanity, but whatever used to drive John Winchester to get through the day didn't matter once Dean and Sam's mother was killed. The need for vengeance took over, and John has spent every day hunting down the thing that tore their family apart.
Years have passed and so far they are no closer to catching up with the demon than they were when it first happened. Dean no longer spends his days watching his father slowly unravel as the vengeance and frustration rips apart a bit of John's heart with each failed attempt to capture the killer. Instead he's watching it happen to his baby brother. Same type of entity came into the Winchester home and this time it was Sammy who lost his heart. The fire burning beneath his brother's skin is passion. The same passion that consumes their father. Fate is a bitch and it seems ironic and unfair that the thing that originally put the distance between John and Sam is now the very thing they share.
Dean feels like an outsider sometimes. Like he's riding the coat tails of their passion, but he can't not be along for the ride. In the back of his mind he wonders if he really wants to risk catching up to the demon that set these wheels in motion. If John or Sam are able to kill what took the women they loved, what will be their passion to live? Dean knows that him needing them won't be enough so what will happen? If they lose that fire and the drive to see another day just so they can have their vengeance, how will they channel their pain?
He feels guilty sometimes for praying that day won't come.
