Room 511, Sunday Night

Sep 03, 2006 22:04

Dean had received his schedule earlier and was still celebrating getting into all the classes he wanted. It was his last night of freedom, and part of him thought he should be out being social, but part of him thought just hanging in his room with the door propped open, relaxing, was the best bet. It was nice not to be constantly shocked by Read more... )

Evie was so nervous about her new classes that her early evening in, to prepare and possibly get ready, is just not happening. So she goes wandering. And knocks on her next-door neighbor's door first. "Hullo?"

"Evie! Hey!" Dean smiles as he finishes taping up the schedule. "Ready for classes tomorrow?"

"Not really," Evie said, wandering in, looking frazzled. She'd put her hair up with a pencil as well as the usual hair ribbon, and her glasses were still perched on her nose. "I have two classes tomorrow, and now I'm terrified I shall fail both of them. What was I thinking? Why didn't I sign up for easy courses, or, or, something where they'd expect me to know nothing, like American History?"

Dean motioned to the chair, raising his eyebrows in invitation as he flopped onto his bed. "Well, I have World History with you, right? So there'll be at least one other person in the class who knows entire volumes less than you do. No worries. What else have you got tomorrow?"

"21st Century Culture. Which sounds *massively* useful, but what if the professor is the type who gives tests based on your agreeing with his opinion? What shall I do then? I can't help it if most of the music and technology here is so unfamiliar I might as well be from a different planet." Evie curled up on the chair and pushed her hands through her hair, frowning when she found the pencil, then takng it out to stare at it.

Dean didn't laugh, because he didn't know if Evie would take it well even if he meant it as a good thing, but she was freaking adorable and it was all he could do to stifle it. "You won't have to worry about that, either. The teacher's a friend of mine. Or at least, an alternate version of a friend of mine. She's crazy and hilarious and I know most of her quirks very well, and she definitely won't grade on whether or not you agree with her opinion. You'll love Lorelai, I promise."

"Oh, really? Are you certain?" Evie collapsed backward with a sigh of relief. "Oh, that *shall* be a help. I can endure looking very silly as long as the teacher isn't penalizing me for it. And... Lorelai? You know her well enough to call her that?" She smiled shyly, and said, "And yes, at least you'll be a familiar face in World History. I shan't feel too lost, then." She sighed. "Do you have any other classes tomorrow?"

"Absolutely positive," he said, chuckling a little. "I know her really well, yeah. Have you met Rory Gilmore? She's a senior, and Lorelai's her mom. They're older than the Rory and Lorelai I know, and apparently this Lorelai married the guy who runs the diner back home, Luke, and they had a baby...and you probably don't care at all, do you?" He shrugged. "Anyway, I don't have any other classes tomorrow, so maybe I'll even poke my head into yours and say hi to Lorelai and tell her to treat you right," Dean added with a conspiratorial wink.

Evie listened with interest, then blushed and said, "Oh, no, you don't have to do that! Truly. I'm certain it will be fine, if you say so. And I find it all very interesting. I love hearing people's stories about themselves." She hugged herself and smiled at him. "Though I must admit, most of those here have ones that are much more interesting than my own."

"I want to, though! Technically, I haven't gotten a chance to meet Lorelai Gilmore-Danes yet," he said, thinking about how weird it was that she and Rory weren't quite the Gilmore girls he was used to. "I don't know if we're even allowed to visit other classes, but if I just wave from the door, that'd probably be okay, right?"

He looked at her, disbelieving. "You just think you don't have an interesting story. It's automatically fascinating to me, because you come from such a different place and time. My life, on the other hand, has been one giant snooze-fest until I got here, and all of a sudden there are doubles and time-warped versions of me and people I love all over the place."

"I shoudl think so?" Evie looked thoughtful. "Especially since you already know her outside of class." She blinked, and said, "Heavens, I never thought about it that way. Although, do you know, I had a double here?" She leaned forward, and nearly tipped off her chair, then corrected herself. "Honestly. There was another Evelyn Carnahan here, last year. I don't know *what* to think about that."

Dean looked suitably gobsmacked. "Like, actually you? Not just someone who looked like you? I mean, I guess it could happen, considering there are two Rorys and two Lorelais and everything. But still. That she would be here..." He trailed off, scooting to the end of the bed nearer to Evie, leaning his elbows on his knees. "Just think about what it would have been like to meet her."

Evie managed not to eep when Dean moved closer, but it was a near shave. "Well, yes. And, and, apparently? She worked on the yearbook, with Rory. And Bel? Almost dated her!" She waved her hand and then asked, "And he's a Senior! It's, I don't know, just-- rather discomfiting, and yet, comforting. She wasn't all that much unlike me, from what they said. But she wasn't me." She paused for breath, and giggled nervously, heard herself, then closed her eyes in embarassment. "Oh, I'm not making any sense."

This time he really did laugh. "You're making as much sense as anyone here ever makes, I think," he said, trying to help. "I can't decide if meeting another one of me would be weirder or less weird than meeting Sam. Because at least the other-one-of-me would be me, instead of looking like me and not being me." He sighed, shaking his head to get his hair out of his eyes. "Now I'm the one not making any sense."

"No, I do see what you mean. Dean and Alec are very definitely different people, and I haven't met your double, but I should imagine there are differences as well." Evie sighed, thinking. "But it's... strange. One expects magic in a magic castle, and animal transformation after one has seen them, but-- strangeness with one's self? I don't know how anyone adjusts completely." She sighed. "Although people bleeding is definitely *more* distressing."

"Bleeding? People? Bleeding people?" Dean definitely looked worried. "You mean, you've seen people bleeding? Or you were a bleeding person?"
