Title: Mel... Part 1
Author: deandratb
Rating: PG
Author's Note: This is based in an AU world I created, so if things are cryptic please have patience. No fandom was involved in the writing of this piece, and any similarities are a huge compliment.

Mel dreamed about Beth the night after they performed their first ritual together. She didn't remember it when she woke up the next morning, but that night started a trend.

They had met at an outdoor gathering for Beltane and started working their spells together, eventually with Emily, more often once junior year ended. The dreams were nothing more than feelings, shapes and colors that she couldn't explain, but they occurred every night following a ritual. And when she looked at Beth, she had a strong sense of remembering something just at the edge of her mind.

Mel didn't know how to define their relationship, mostly due to lack of experience. She'd never played well with others, and having Katie as her best and only friend had always suited her. They'd been friends since they were seven years old, so their friendship had seemed to exist on its own, with almost no drama or even much direct effort. Consequently, her relationship skills were completely nonexistent. She hadn't expected to find new friends once Katie became Kate, found religion, and decided to try being normal.

But the more she studied Wicca after that first saving-the-world adventure, the more she tried to accept the natural rhythms of the world, and Beth and Emily had just seemed to find their way into her world, naturally.

So she tried to focus on the positive-- having supportive friends who actually seemed to like and understand her-- and to downplay the negative. (She was trying to prove she could live as an independent adult while still in high school, she had spent her sophomore year watching a man kill his evil double so the world wouldn't end, and it was pretty likely she was in love with one of her closest friends.)

Trying to focus on the positive went against her entire cynical worldview, but she figured it was worth a shot. The whole destiny thing was behind her now, and she only had to survive one more year of high school. Unfortunately, pretending not to remember her dreams would have to be a big part of that. Her new life was still really... well, new, and she didn't want to ruin it.

And besides, even if she couldn't define it, what she had with Beth was magickal. Nothing could change that.
