Part 2

Dean couldn’t help his shock at seeing an egg clasped in Castiel’s grasp. It’s speckled gray and just barely too big to fit inside the safety of Cas’s cupped hands. This hadn’t been what Dean had expected when he’d agree to Cas bearing their child. He’d been expecting some variation upon the virgin birth idea, only with less virginity and more immaculate delivery since Cas’s form was definitely male. He had prepared himself for a baby suddenly appearing in Cas’s arm he hadn’t been prepared for the immaculate conception of an egg. It kind or felt like one of those messed up parenting classes where everybody spends half their time trying not to drop the egg and kill their “kid”.

Even so he can’t bring himself to worry too much about the impossibility and stupidity of their having an egg for a child when Cas is grinning down at the thing with obvious excitement. Still he can’t let the fact that Cas hadn’t informed him of this little fact prior to his agreeing to their having a child go without comment.

"So you’re really just a holy Big Bird under that vessel huh Ca?." He asks foolishly expecting Cas to get the joke or at least get it enough to be annoyed. Cas’s blank look and the fact that he barely took his eyes off their little Big Bird Junior long enough to contemplate what Dean was saying makes it clear that he neither understands or cares about Dean’s attempt at levity.

Cas stays with them for a few more days after he births/lays their child’s egg (or whatever, the egg, as Dean prefers to think of it because thinking about how your angelic lover managed to create an egg that houses your kid is just too disturbing for words) which Dean is grateful for because Cas is still weak from whatever power he used to create their child. Unfortunately, all too soon Castiel has to go back to causing trouble for the archangels. It’s the only way to keep them from finding out about BB Jr. and no matter how much Dean hates being away from Cas he isn’t willing to risk their child so he can selfishly keep the man he loves with him.

Castiel was quite pleased with their child. When the egg had first appeared he’d had the vague sense that Dean was disappointed, but any thought he’d given to such concerns soon melted away as he gazed upon their child. It was unusual for a heavenly child to be born and he’d only seen a few child eggs but he was glad to see that his own wasn’t the bright white that was said to show the child’s holy nature. Instead, their Child’s egg was a speckled gray that displayed both his father’s natures.

The days he’d spent with his child were truly awe inspiring and allowed him to better understand his father’s devotion to even the most sinful of his children. How could a father fail to forgive their child anything?

It usually sickened him to be away from Dean but being away from both Dean and their child was much worse. All he wanted to do was lay in bed with dean their bodies curled around their precious egg. Instead he is playing a dangerous game of hide and seek with the archangels and searching for his father. It is times like this he understands Dean’s hatred of duty.

Part 3

Even though he hadn’t expected it, Dean quickly adjusted to being the father of an egg. He even made BB Jr. a nest in an old backpack so the little guy would have a safe place to stay whenever Cas wasn’t able to be with the family and help take care of BB Jr. The nest that seemed to please Cas to no end and as an added bonus let Dean leave Jr. safely ensconced inside Impala when he went hunting. So far the protection Cas had etched into the Impala and into the paper seals that Dean had used to line the backpack turned nest seemed to be working and no demons or angels had noticed the presence of an egg during their various hunting excursions.

Sam on the other hand had noticed Jr. and wasn’t adjusting to being Uncle Egghead as well as Dean was adjusting to being BB Jr.’s father. He also kept bitching about how Big Bird Junior was a horrible name for a heavenly child. Dean had been expecting him to have one of his predictable freak-outs over the fact that Dean had not only helped conceive a child during the apocalypse but had gotten an angel of the Lord pregnant. He hadn’t expected Sam to be afraid to touch Jr. When Dean asked him why he’s said something about tainted blood that Dean had immediately rejected. Demon blood or no Sammy was family and BB Jr. wasn’t going to attack family. Despite Dean’s reassurances, it had been almost two weeks and Sammy still hadn’t touched Junior’s egg. Dean had decided that it was time for drastic measures and BB Junior’s nest had taken Sam’s seat in the Impala. When that wasn’t enough to get Sammy to get over his fears and stop him from acting like a woose Dean had started playing his most obnoxious music nonstop whenever they were in the Impala.

Luckily, BB Jr. seemed to have inherited his Daddy’s innate sense of good music and didn’t seem to mind Daddy’s attempts to toughen Aunt Samantha up. Junior had even taken to vibrating whenever Dean played Metallica; which confirmed for Dean that his kid was going to be smarter than this Uncle Sammy. Because why else would he have better taste in music than his uncle?

Castiel is impressed and somewhat concerned by the rate at which his and Dean’s child is growing. Cas had only seen full angel eggs before and he could only assume by the eggs rate of growth that their child was taking after his human father. As could be proved by the fact that it was only going to take their child months to hatch instead of decades.

His only concern regarding the egg’s rate of growth was that his child was bound to outgrow its nest soon. Dean had been threatening to put a car seat into the Impala if their child did so. This idea greatly troubled Castiel as car seats appeared to be unnatural and unsafe human devices that were completely unsuitable for the transport of eggs. How could a seat with straps that appeared to be almost impossible to install correctly protect their child?

Dean did not seem to share his concern, but then Dean had never seen an angelic child egg before their own and did not fully comprehend their fragility. At least in all subjects save car seats Dean had gone into full overprotective Daddy mode. As the amount of Metallica that he heard coming from the Impala whenever he joined the brothers proved.

Part 4

Jr. was doing well. Heavy as anything and if he kept growing Dean swore he was going to come out of the egg as big as Uncle Sammy. Dean is unfortunately not going to be able to call him Big Bird Jr. any more seeing as Daddy Cas had finally seen Big Bird, and if the speech he had submitted Dean to was anything to go by, he had decided that Big Bird was a “goggley eyed and feathered demon for the netherworld”. Dean still hadn’t forgiven Sammy for chuckling through the Cas’ whole longwinded speech on the evils of Sesame Street, even though he’d had to choke back laughter himself after hearing Cas make the comment on how “talking animals went against God’s order”.

They had finally managed to introduce (BB)Jr. to Grandpa Bobby. Even Dean had found the look on Bobby’s face at the sight of Junior hilarious, which was odd considering his usual reaction to people looking at the egg oddly. After the original shock, Bobby really seemed to warm up to Junior. Though Dean could have done without the ear-chewing lecture about safe sex, really what was it about impeding fatherhood that made everyone think you needed to be lectured?

Just because he wasn’t the most responsible guy around, that didn’t mean he needed help being a good father. He’d more or less raised Sammy after all. Okay, maybe that wasn’t the best representation of his child rearing skills. Anyway, avian jokes aside, he was taking care of Junior just fine.

At least Grandpa Bobby was willing to watch over Junior when he and Sammy had to go hunting on jobs where he didn’t think Junior would be safe in the Impala. Junior seemed to like the isolation room okay though Dean kept telling Bobby that he should put a boom box with some Metallica tapes in the room to make Junior feel at home. He’s sure that he can wear Bobby down eventually.

Castiel is glad that Bobby had taken to his and Dean’s child so well. He knew how important Robert Singer was to the boys and had been concerned with the amount of time Bobby had spent contemplating ending his earthly journey. Their child seemed to have given Bobby a new purpose for living as he seemed obsessed with seeing Dean’s son born or at least seeing their son torture Dean into submission.

He also appreciated the use of Bobby’s safe room. He had recently become concerned with the interest both Zachariah and Lucifer were showing in the Winchester’s personal life, though they currently seemed to think that Sam was the one who had conceived a child. Castiel didn’t expect that confusion to last for long and was preparing for the eventuality that they would have to protect Junior’s immature egg form from their enemies, something that Bobby’s safe room would be a great help in doing.

Part 5

Castiel had been saying that (BB) Jr. was going to hatch soon; something Dean was very happy about considering that Zachariah had somehow figured out what he and Cas had done. Cas seemed sure that even Zachariah would be too sinful to touch their child once he’d hatched, which meant that no demon or fallen angel would stand a chance. Which was great but begged the question of how they were supposed to touch the kid without being burned to a crackly crisp?

Despite all the benefits of having Jr. hatched, Dean wasn’t ready for it to happen. He’d gotten attached to his little eggy buddy. He didn’t know what he was going to do if the kid didn’t like him. At least as long as he was an egg there wasn’t any way for Dean to mess him up and no matter what Cas said, Dean was sure he’d manage to do something wrong. He can still remember all the trouble he had with Sam when he was a baby.

He didn’t see Cas being that useful either as he didn’t understand grownup humans, much less babies, and from what he’d said Dean didn’t get the impression that there were a lot of angelic babies for him to spend time with. He just hoped that between the two of them and with liberal phone calls to Bobby, they’d at least manage not to mess the kid up as bad as Sammy was messed up, not that a half angel baby could cause as much trouble as a half demon.

It had been a joyous moment when Dean called him and said that their child was going to come into the world. When he appeared in Dean’s room the brothers were gathered around the bed were Jr’s nest was perched. A broken down hotel bed was perhaps not the most glamorous of birthplaces, but his father’s son had been born under much worse conditions.

The egg was vibrating and giving off the music of the spheres. It’s gray mass glowing white against the dingy green hotel bed comforter. This was the moment he’d been waiting for since he had begun his attempts to convince Dean to have a child with him. Their beautiful child would join them soon. He was concentrating so hard on the egg that he almost didn’t notice Dean sneaking up beside him until an arm slid under his coat and wrapped around his waist. Together they watched as the egg disintegrated and the light that made up their child’s celestial body appeared. It was warm and soft, twining around and through them as though it was judging their souls. Castiel could feel Dean shudder at the touch, unused to soul deep communication.

When the light receded some unnamable time later a beautiful little girl lay sleeping in Dean’s arm. It was the most wonderful moment in Castiel’s admittedly long existence. Even dearer to him than the night his father’s son was born. This was his own personal Christmas and if the light of joy that was glowing from Dean’s eyes was anything to go by it was his as well.
