We almost had Subarued Venison for dinner last night. I don't know what I was looking at when this deer ambled onto the road, but it certainly wasn't the road. Or the deer. I probably made the person in the car behind me pee his pants, given how long it took me to get around to applying the brakes. However, I did not hit the ambling deer and avoided having to haul a carcass home in a damaged car. Phew.
Having a fresh deer carcass on my lawn, however, would have pleased the Democratic Committee folks that visited us. Steve was splitting wood and I was weeding in my fenced-in garden when they drove up. We both signed a bunch of petitions to get people on various ballots, then chit-chatted about firewood, gardens and deer. Steve said something about the wood being for outdoor bonfires, then wondered whether or not he should have said that to someone from down the mountain and involved in government. But the guy said, "I'm pretty sure that's legal. Besides, you're up here in Taborton. No one knows what goes on in Taborton."
True.
It's Friday today, and quiet here at work. Coworker C has brought me some eggs, and all of this wood splitting and weeding and talk of local food and farmer's markets has me thinking about subsistence and future garden plans. That's right, people: It is June 20th, and I am ready to start planning next year's garden. But first I must actually be a little productive for a while. Wish me luck.
