Did more research on the diet. Found out about something they call "die-off symptoms" -- that's what a lot of this feeling bad is. And THAT is why I'm not going Cold Turkey. I did it before and I refuse to do it again. Also found some great forums and sites. One forum covers the whole thing, from drugs to foods to supplements to lifestyle changes. Another was a naturopath that suggests taking supplements to counteract what is happening to my body. So get this:
Yeasts break sugars down into carbon dioxide and ethanol. The body then converts that ethanol into a chemical called acetaldehyde. This is the chemical responsible for hangover symptoms when drinking alcohol. It is more toxic to the body than alcohol according to my sources (ok, wikipedia -- they're my next google) The liver converts the acetaldehyde into acetic acid, which the body can then convert to acetyl coenzyme A and use. But with too much acetaldehyde in the system, the liver gets overloaded and can't convert it all. An element called molybdenum (or rather, its cofactor) can also convert the acetaldehyde. This element is found in plants and is highly present in dark leafy greens and grains like oats. It is technically a heavy but the dosage needed to cause mild poisoning in humans is quite high and is unlikely with common supplements.
There's also talk about Copper and Zinc and their role in Iron use in the blood. And yellow dock root for blood health. And garlic as an anti-fungal (yeast is a fungus). Taking probiotics (good bacterias) is also recommended as is potassium. And digestive enzymes so that no food goes undigested and feeds the yeasts. Looks like I'm back to having a health food store in my bathroom. Yikes!
Here's the other thing -- I need to figure out a source of serotonin. When we digest carbs, the body produces serotonin. It makes us feel good and calm. When people have an inability to absorb the produced serotonin, they get depressed, thus the SSRIs on the market today, right? So, how can I get the serotonin high without eating the carbs? I've gotta figure that one out.
