Vampires don’t live solely on blood alone. They eat regular food and drink what any wizard or witch drinks, ever day. Blood is a wonderful treat that enhances the vampire, and the donor. It can be taken in everyday with no ill effects (to the vampire.) But it is better savored if taken in bi-weekly or even monthly.
Even though they don’t live on it, blood calls vampires. If you have a bleeding injury near a vampire, they will offer to heal it, just to have a taste. Don’t be afraid to say no if you are not comfortable. The vampire will understand, and not push you. To do anything without your permission is a breach of etiquette, more later. However, don’t be afraid to take the leap and say yes, also. What your answer should be based on is your familiarity with the vampire, how comfortable you are with them, and how much you trust them.
For example, I would let Severus heal me in a heartbeat. If I had to, I would let Draco heal me, though it would feel odd, because he’s family. But I would rather die before I let Sarah come anywhere near me. Every case is different, and the deciding factor is: what are you willing to do? What do you feel comfortable doing?
The big question is, why do vampires want to drink blood. It’s… gross. Here’s why: vampires are the only ones with the senses that can tell what is in blood. By that I mean the personality and history of the person.
Blood is, literally, your life force. It is what allows your body to function smoothly. Think about the route the blood takes through your body. Every drop has run through both your heart and your mind. Therefore blood contains your personality, and the essence of what makes you the person you are. Vampires have the ability to taste and experience this when they drink blood.
It’s an intense experience, knowing someone like that. That’s why vampires won’t drink from just anyone.
The connection goes both ways, to a certain degree. The saliva from the vampires mouth gets into the bite wound, and delivers the vampires essence to the donor. It is not as intense as drinking blood, but the personality is still there.
For a few clans, the act of drinking your mates blood is equal, or grater than, sex. Drinking is the only true way to consummate a relationship or marriage. As this act requires a greater intimacy than sex, you might understand why this is so.
Sex is less intimate because there is often no obligation for the two partners to be together forever. When a vampire bites, they are bound to that person for the rest of their lives. This is because each partner is given a part of the other that forever stays with them. The vampire finds it hard to be rid of the memory of such an intense emotion and personality. Also, certain blood is addicting. (See Chapter Three: Bonding)
Due to the lure of blood, many vampires love to drink every day. They find it impossible to resist the call, especially as they become familiar with the blood of a particular person. For this reason, many vampires prefer to take on lovers who are also vampiric. Vampires have the ability to quickly regenerate the lost blood, and don’t suffer from the low blood level that humans are apt to succumb to. Also, vampires are able to replenish some of the lost blood by drinking from their mate.
Although it is rare, there are vampires who take human lovers. Thus the draining of the blood is something that must be monitored closely. Humans were not born to be drunk from as many vampires are, and they cannot replenish their blood supply by drinking from their mate. Thus, it is important for both parties to be very alert until the human body becomes more adapted to the lower amount of blood they will have.
It is very important for the human partner to always drink a lot of fluids. This will help the blood supply replenish quicker. Rest is also very important. The loss of blood will at first be a shock to the body, and the heart will pump faster, attempting to keep all organs functioning at the normal level. So rest for the body is important, or the heart could give out.
It is important that the first time a human is bled, the vampire takes no more than a pint. Then they must wait at least four weeks, though any blood donation center will tell you eight weeks is best, for the body to recover before they can drink again. Slowly, the vampire can begin to take more and bring the sessions closer together. However, the donor must take care of themselves. Both partners have to be very attentive to what the donor’s body is saying.
Most vampires know this, and are taught this from a very young age. It is the humans that need to be educated.
When a vampire bites someone, whether human or another vampire, a bond is formed. The bond will vary in intensity depending on where the bite took place. (See Chapter Three: Bonding)
In essence, blood is an addictive drug to the vampires. If they are used to frequent drinking, they can suffer withdrawl if something happens to their mate. They don’t suffer from not drinking, however, if they are not used to drinking every day.
