The IMF doesn't just stand for International Monetary Fund anymore.
I have satellite television service, which comes with 100 channels, at least 50 of which are pure crap. Fortunately, there is a "Favorites" feature that lets viewers set their own channel lists, and I have made good use of that feature. The one problem is, on the odd occasion a new channel is added to the line-up, I often remain unaware. I do remember to check once in every great while, and see if anything new has been added, and did so the other night. And what to my wondering eyes did appear but a new music channel named "IMF".
Being a bit of a geek (OK more than a bit) my first thought was "the International Monetary Fund has a music channel?" That was enough to intrigue me so I clicked over. Nope, nothing to do with any kind of world bank after all - it stands for
International Music Feed. And it is awesome.
First of all, it actually shows videos. I have faint memories of this happening on other music channels like MTV and the late, lamented V66, but it's been years since I'd seen one music video following another. To boot, these are videos for bands from around the world, for songs I'd never heard before, well out of the corporate music industry purview.
AND there are next to no commercials! At first I thought there were no commercials at all and was getting distracted by the question of how this was all financed, when, finally, a commercial aired. Just one though, and then back to the music. What?! I can't remember the last time I saw just one commercial before returning to programming. I thought they ran in packs, like ladies going to the bathroom.
So now I feel like I'm a young teenager again. I come home, turn on IMF, and sit back and watch videos. I don't love all the songs, and I actually saw a Mariah Carey video last night, but I didn't hold it against the channel. If anything, that's just proof that they do indeed cast a wide musical net. Long live the IMF!
