As always - the prose is flawless, delightful to read - in screaming contrast to the distressed characters. Communication is an empty word here.
- and that fits the Luke&Callista realtionship perfectly! It's definitely the most traumatic of the post-OT storyarches - to a degree that I've never understood just HOW Callista was supposed to be the 'great love' of Luke's life as Hambly was tasked to write. I liked C's character, and CotJ and PoT in their own right - but I always thought that love story was hyped. And so, I've always seen it as a product of the circumstances in CoTJ - finding it very natural it ended. You give perfect nourish to this my opinion here!
"Cray loved a man so much she put him in a machine. Luke’s done the opposite."
Except, of course, that it was Callista herself who did that choise - but that's nitpicking - this is still a perfect summary of L&C's relationship. As this fic is an outstanding take on the same!
...so unsettlingly written it actually settles it a little...

I liked C's character, and CotJ and PoT in their own right - but I always thought that love story was hyped.
I'm the same, I don't hate Callista or that arc, but it was badly misjudged. And it's true -- bonding in adversity doesn't always mean a healthy and happy relationship forever. (OMG, movies have lied to me!)
Except, of course, that it was Callista herself who did that choise - but that's nitpicking
I was thinking more along the lines of what Callista means to him emotionally, but it's true, Callista does hold the blame for the actual 'possess Cray's body' decision, doesn't she... She really has a terrible record when it comes to making decisions relating to men in her life given that a similar situation left her stuck in the Eye in the first place.
