Saw Star Trek tonight and thought it was fantastic. The reboot aspect was handled well (aeons better than Enterprise's fumbling half-attempt, even if I do have a soft spot for ENT and all its flaws), and the alternate reality thing was well executed -- explained enough that it was clear this isn't rewriting Trek to date, but not to the detriment of the plot. Thought the cast were excellent -- all of them, but Chris Pine was amazing as Kirk -- and I liked the nods to original Trek, and also thought they struck a healthy balance in terms of humour and pathos.

The Spock/Uhura threw me a little, even though I had been spoiled enough to know there was something there. I wasn't expecting it to be so overt, and mentor/former student relationships are not a favourite of mine, so although I like both characters I'm not sure about the 'ship. (I do wonder if part of the motivation for it being there was to deflect the outpouring of Kirk/Spock slash? In which case, nice try, but I seriously think you underestimate the dedication of slashers). All up, highly enjoyable and very promising. It seems this premise could do for Trek what the 2005 series did for Doctor Who if handled well.

Very sad to read of Bud Tingwell's death. I can remember him doing a one-off guest role on the childrens' show Round the Twist when I was in primary school, and even watching him that young, you couldn't miss the remarkable presence he had onscreen. He brought a dignity to his roles that you don't find anywhere else, and he'll be missed. Truly a legend in every sense.
