I have a routine at Goodwill. I check the records and CDs. I owe my awareness and love of Radiohead to those pitiful stacks. The next stop, the book section, is where I spend most of my visit. I'm not looking for a great read, but look for books with hand-written notes, or my ultimate desire: a used journal. I know that it is extremely unlikely that someone would donate such a personal item (or that it would be for sale)but the idea of it is enough. In the David Bowie record I purchased for a dollar and tax, I found the lyrics for a couple of the tracks. Given the yellowed paper and worn magic marker making each awkward purple letter, someone thought that these were songs were worth listening to.
