US Marines as Death Squad?

I'm sure all those who consider themselves 'conservatives' are aware of the various 'left-wing' claims of US soldiers acting in very violent, criminal ways in Iraq against the civilian population. It often seems to be one of the items which separates conservatives from liberals: the belief in whether or not the American military force is acting as a liberator or as an oppressor. Do American soldiers commit atrocities as reprehensible as those they label 'terrorists'..? Most liberals or left-wingers seem to say yes, while the conservatives or right-wingers tend to say no.

I am interested in the thoughts of conservatives regarding the following US Marine intelligence team investigation into a particular incident in Iraq:

SOURCE: LA TIMES - Photos Indicate Civilians Slain Execution-Style
"Photographs taken by a Marine intelligence team have convinced investigators that a Marine unit killed as many as 24 unarmed Iraqis, some of them 'execution-style', in the insurgent stronghold of Haditha after a roadside bomb killed an American in November, officials close to the investigation said Friday.

The pictures are said to show wounds to the upper bodies of the victims, who included several women and six children. Some were shot in the head and some in the back, congressional and defense officials said."

Thoughts..? If this incident did indeed take place, is such action defensible in any way? If this incident did indeed take place, does it not give credence to the other claims of abhorrent behaviour by the American military in Iraq?
