Background:
For the most part Adel lived a small village called Haplith, in the Micah region of his world made of mostly farmland and open plains. There were few forests but his own village resided somewhat on the outskirts so there was plenty of forest around them. He had a generally peaceful life and lived with his mother (his father had passed away before his birth). Most of his time was spent playing with his childhood friend Matthew. All of this came to an abrupt end when a game game of hide-and-seek brought the pair to the cursed woods deep inside the surroundings forest and they decided to venture in despite Matt's initial dislike of the idea.
Soon enough they came to a run-down structure of what seemed to have been some sort of chapel. They went inside to explore and found a cellar that was pretty much ordinary save for a massive stone slab that had at one point served as a sealed doorway. It had been cracked by time though, and only Adel ventured inside to have a look around. Mostly just to look brave in front of his friend, but that turned out to be a huge mistake since within the sealed room lay the book of the most feared Necromancer in all of history, Ashur. They wound up taking it back to Adel's room to to figure out what it was and to try and open it but nothing they did had any effect until while handling it Adel cut his finger on the bound pages and the blood unsealed its lock. Instantly power came rushing out of the evil tome and flooded the area, cursing Adel and at the same time wiping out all life in the entire village in an instant.
When he awoke he found that everything around him had changed. Wood had gone rotted, paint had peeled and the stench of decay was everywhere. In less than five minutes all of Haplith had lost its life, the remains of Matt's body lying across the room from him. They were almost indiscernible; blood was splattered on walls and limbs were misshapen and torn in the most unnatural of ways and quite honestly part of Adel just stopped that day. Everywhere he went in the village was the same, too; like people had been torn apart and then ground up into the dirt.
But they kept moving anyway. In fact what was left of the villagers became something worse than the undead and started to come after him; friends and family that he'd grown up with had suddenly become worse than any nightmare he could have come up with. But something inside of him had changed upon releasing the book's power--and he could feel it as he watched the remains of the villagers come after him. He knew what to do, and how to stop them. Power he had never possessed before flowed out of him and for the first time in his life, Adel used Necromancy.
When it cleared there was nothing else but him in the village. There was no one he knew or loved left, and the extreme emptiness and loneliness he felt drove him to use the evil magic again to resurrect Matt and collect his remains. And then he went even further and called back his soul from beyond the grave. He wasn't alive though; he was a zombie.
That wasn't good enough for Adel though, and since then he's devoted the rest of his life to finding a way to return the perpetually ten-year-old to normal before the curse overtakes him and he dies.
Of course the road to this hasn't always been smooth. Even if he inherited Ashur's powers Adel wasn't able to control them properly at first and has destroyed a total of four villages by mistake; once when pick-pockets knocked him out and he lost control of Matt, who began to eat and infect people in the town until he had no choice but to get remove the life from the town. Two more were felled when he unleashed it as raw power and drained the life from everywhere around him, and the fourth and final one had already been terminally affected by plague; Adel simply took what was left of their life force when he passed through to keep them from suffering (and to stop it from spreading).
Abilities:
NECROMANCY. Which is a very old and evil magic where he comes from. It was first invented by Ashur thousands of years ago and he used it to terrorize the entire continent until he was defeated by the Holy Saint, Joan and his book sealed away forever. At least until it was stolen and wound up where Adel could find it anyway.
It' the most dangerous of all magics despite its obvious strength--turning fallen enemies into one's army. In order to use it, it requires the use of one's own soul to lure the dead back to the world of the living since having lost their own lives they thirst for those of others. Many aspiring Necromancers have been devoured by their own summons, however in the hands of an experienced or gifted Necromancer it can become a deadly magic. Especially when the caster is near a place with the bodies of the dead.
When it is activated magic flows through Adel's system, causing his eyes to flicker an eerie purple as it surrounds his body and the area near him. The air drops in temperature and those closest will get and immediate feeling of unease. Normally when using Necromancy he moves his hands as though playing a piano or conducting a puppet show.
He can summon any undead creature, though different types require different circumstances.
Bone armor/weapons: Needs bones, and they're just what they sound like. He can reshape bones into whatever he wants, and even change their density.
Skeletons: the simplest uses, it requires the bodies of those already deceased.
Zombies: more dangerous both for those around them and their wielder; they carry a curse that turns whoever they bite into a zombie as well. It requires a corpse to create.
Spirits of the general undead: substantially more dangerous, it requires the usage of more of his soul to channel them into the plain of the living.
Wraiths: Danger mode here; they can be used to attack, but he never summons them because THEY ARE EFFING CREEPY. And hard to control.
Reapers: BAD BAD V. BAD. If he summons one of these he's putting himself in grave danger--he pretty much wears his own soul outside his body to keep the Reaper at his side and fighting "with" him; kind of like possession.
Matthew: Probably the most dangerous of all since he needs to constantly keep a connection with the boy to keep his soul attached to his body. Normally when one dies their soul moves on and cannot be connected to their dead body any longer, so in order to accomplish this Adel uses as much of his soul as he can spare to "magnetize" Matt's to his undead body.
Ashur: The real source of his curse; the further he immerses himself in Ashur's power, the more powerful the curse becomes. And unlike Adel thinks, its purpose it not to end his physical life...
Weaknesses:
SO PHYSICALLY WEAK YOU HAVE NO IDEA. But what did you expect from a diet of booze and chocolate? He can't run long distances (although he's a GREAT sprinter thanks to being the most wanted person in the world), has very little stamina and can't hold his own in a fight to save his life. Adel would rather let his summoned help do the fighting for him. This doesn't mean he can't fight himself--he's a very good manipulative fighter, but when it comes to raw power he loses hands-down. He's more of a strategic fighter.
He's also extremely lazy, and a bit of a klutz.
Also Necromancy has no effect on Demons as in his world they feed on the power of souls--which is used to fuel the summoned minions he uses. So basically it's like throwing cheeseburgers at hyenas.
Personality:
LOSER.
So to speak. Adel hates having to do anything that resembles work--so much so that he frauded his way into the Imperial Capital's research and development section under a fake name so he could get research grants and a yearly salary. No joke.
He likes to sleep in and mostly keeps to himself, so when put in a social setting with others he doesn't function as well as he should. Most of his time is spent searching for a way to return Matthew to life and it's his sole motivation for living; he knows there isn't a cure for his curse and that he's doomed to a finite amount of time left alive. Conflict is something he loves to avoid so Adel constantly hides behind "fake" Adels that are usually just mounds of decomposing flesh shaped into human form to fool anyone who might be looking for him.
All that aside though, he really is a nice guy. He's loyal and caring and will do absolutely anything for Matt and would sacrifice himself for his friend in a heartbeat. He feels genuine remorse for every life he's ever taken and keeps none of the stolen life he takes for himself; he always brings it to the nearest chapel to give them a proper send-off and to purify them from any taint so they can ascend safely.
He's friendly to pretty much anyone he meets, but even if he's outwardly charismatic he puts a big wall between himself and most people since he knows that he'll only cause problems for them. Adel isn't above "threatening" people to make them keep a safe distance or to give up before a conflict can break out since he doesn't want to hurt anyone or draw attention to himself. Also he loves older women. A LOT. Mature, voluptuous and bouncy ladies are the kind he likes best. ind of to the point where he becomes an idiot around them and will even try to get with someone who is obviously an enemy.
Adel has a trigger as well. Two different ones, actually--his scholar trigger and his raeg trigger. Anytime he sees something new or out of the ordinary when it comes to magic or physiology or...anything, rally, he becomes crazy-obsessed with documenting and finding out anything he can about it in case it helps him on his search for immortality. Raeg is trigger by insulting/harming Matthew.
AND THAT ABOUT SUMS HIM UP I THINK.
