Ianto decided he could be late the next morning. After all, he had bitten the bullet and tried with the girls last night. For all the good it did any of them. Tosh and Gwen had laughed in his face.
And it’s not like he had any proof.
They did admit he seemed to believe it. So, they’d tried to convince him that Owen was just playing a trick on him. Tosh and Gwen had actually spent the better part of three hours pointing all the ways in which he was wrong. Despite the fact that he was going blue in the face from protesting the truth.
He almost started to believe them in the end. That’s when he decided he’d drank far more than enough. Of course, when he tried to leave they decided the best way to convince him of their ‘truth’ was to get Owen to admit it.
They dragged him all the way over to Owen’s. As they got in the taxi, Ianto had briefly considered telling them Owen wouldn’t be home. That was until he realised they were treating him like a particularly slow imbecile.
Really, what did they take him for?
At Owen’s, Tosh proceeded to pick the lock in a matter of seconds, that kind of gave Ianto pause to wonder exactly how sociopath his co-workers actually were. Not as much as the fact Gwen seemed to expect it, though. Just what do these two get up to together?
Owen wasn’t home.
No surprise there, not for Ianto at least. Of course, Gwen just assumed he was out picking up some bimbo and insisted they wait for him.
That’s when Ianto left. Although, it did take a promise that he would listen to Owen ‘confess’ tomorrow at work. After the girls beat the confession out of him.
Ianto wasn’t too worried about the fact they actually used the phrase ‘beat it out of him’, after all Owen was safely ensconced in Ianto’s flat and wouldn’t be back here for a while.
That was the other reason he wasn’t worried about showing up late.
The second reason he didn’t need to be in a rush, to Ianto’s mind at least. When you are hiding your bosses illegitimate lovechild for him, whether he’s aware of it or not, you shouldn’t have to get up at 5am. That’s just not right.
Especially when said lovechild tried to steal your bed the night before. Honestly, the guest bed was just as comfortable. Owen had said if that was the case he could sleep in it and let Owen have his bed. Ianto had protested it was the principle of the thing.
Ianto actually climbed in beside Owen, resigned to sharing a bed with his lover’s brat, when a thought occurred to him and he immediately started describing, in detail, just what he and Owen’s father had gotten up to in that exact bed.
Owen was gone before he’d even gotten to the naked parts.
That leads to the other reason he wasn’t worried about showing up late.
When your boss, and lover, dumps this kind of crap on you, you should get some leniency.
He still isn’t sure how he feels about the whole mess.
Jack lied and hidden a precious piece of himself from Ianto, but that didn’t make Owen to blame, so for once Ianto found himself in the position where he was siding with Owen against Jack. Not that Owen seemed particularly put out with his dad. He just didn’t want to see the Doctor.
But, Ianto was sure that was more a case of nerves.
It had to be. For a man who swore he had no intention of going near the Doctor he certainly wanted to know a lot about him. He’d spent the last 2 hours, of Ianto’s leisurely breakfast, nagging for information on his other father.
Ianto was about to drag him to the Hub to meet the other man, when it occurred to him. The Doctor was at the Hub. Had been all night. The Doctor and Jack. Alone.
He was out the door within seconds.
The entire drive over he was picturing images of them rekindling whatever it was they had shared that resulted in Owen. What he found was two pouting men, at either end of the Hub, both pretending the other didn’t exist.
“Jack?” Ianto called to him as he approached. He wasn’t sure if the other man had even noticed his arrival, so steadfast was his ‘ignoring’ of the Doctor.
“Oh, Ianto. Good morning, you look great. How are you feeling?” Jack was overly bubbly and smiling in that obviously fake way. Ianto just shook his head and walk away from his boss, who called after him, “Ianto?”
The Welshman decided to try the Doctor. “Good morning, Doctor.”
“Ianto, isn’t it?” The alien was smiling in a quiet, unassuming manner that Ianto didn’t buy for a moment.
He sighed and turned to Jack, who have followed him to the Doctor’s side.
“Alright, far be it from me to complain that you two aren’t all lovey-dovey, but what have you done to piss each other off?”
“He’s being a bastard!” The Doctor shouts, pointing at the Captain.
“He’s trying to steal Owen.” Jack all but growls back.
Ianto’s sure there was going to be more, from both of them, but the very idea of it was just so… hilarious. Ianto let rip with some semi-hysterical laughter. “Oh, that’s a good one! As if. Tosh’d never let you get past the door with him.”
The Doctor pouts, but apparently Jack has taken Ianto’s comment as vindication, “That’s what he wants! He plans to take Owen and Tosh. Both of them.”
Ianto turns to the Doctor, expression questioning. The Doctor sheepishly nods.
“Mmm, well in that case, it might work. Probably will, actually. All he needs to do is tempt Tosh away and Owen will follow along like the little puppy she’s spent years training him to be.”
The Doctor now looks smug and Jack has progressed to simply growling, without the interference of pesky words. “Ianto, darling, don’t give him ideas!”
“Jack, he hasn’t even met Owen yet. It’s not like they’d be leaving right this very minute.” Ianto rolls his eyes at his lover’s pout. “Oh, and don’t call me that. I’m still pissed at you.”
The Doctor’s smirk grows, that is until Ianto turns to him with a glare, “And as for you, Doctor, I accept that you’ll be around for a while, at the least, but I will not tolerate any interference in our team. Is that clear?” The Doctor looks wary, but nods. “Also, please be aware if you harm either of my friends, Owen or Tosh in any way, or hurt their feelings, I will make you regret it.” He turns to leave, then thinks of something else, “Oh, that goes for Jack too. He’s still mine- even if I am pissed, hands off.” Then the glare disappears, replaced by a bright smile, “Coffee?”
“Eh, tea. Please,” the Doctor answers after a moment. Ianto nods and walks off to the kitchen. The Doctor turns to Jack, “Kind of scary, isn’t he?” Jack nods. “I like him. Yes, yes hands off.” He adds the last as he notices Jack’s eyes darken in anger again.
They share a smile and Jack opens his mouth to say something, but obviously changes his mind as something else occurs to him and he turns in the direction of the kitchen, “Ianto, where is Owen? And Tosh and Gwen, for that matter?”
“Owen’s flat,” is called back.
“And the girls?” Jack adds.
“That is the girls.” Ianto answers, approaching with a tray of drinks.
“What?” Jack looks stupefied and the Doctor gob smacked.
“I thought you said Tosh and Owen weren’t actually together, let alone in a threesome.” The Doctor’s tone is accusing.
“They’re not and he and Gwen broke up ages ago-”
“Broke up? Do you all shag each other? Is it in the contract or something?”
Ianto laughs and Jack pouts, “I wish.”
Ianto and the Doctor both laugh at that.
“Why are the girls with Owen?”
Ianto smirks at Jack as he sits at Owen’s vacant desk. “I didn’t say they were. They are at Owen’s waiting for him.”
“Why waiting?” the Doctor enquires.
“I’m sorry to be the one to tell you this, but Owen ran away from home yesterday.” The blatantly panicked looks on their faces almost makes Ianto regret his choice of words. Almost. “Oh, relax, he’s in hiding. Says he’ll come back when he feels like it. Or if we actually really need him.”
“Need him?” the Doctor asks, confused.
“As a doctor. So, Ianto-”
“I am not getting injured just so you can trick him back here.”
“I was only going to suggest we fake it! I would never want to see you really hurt.”
“Actually, I could break it and use the sonic screwdriver to- eh, no then?” The Doctor didn’t expect them both to look at his in shock. “Why are your friends at his flat then?”
Ianto smiles at the Doctor’s change of subject. “Oh, right. You’re on your own with them, Jack.”
“What? But you-”
“Tried. They didn’t believe me, though. In fact, they are convinced I’m as slow and dim-witted as an actual buffoon who has fallen for an obvious prank of Owen’s.”
“Seriously?” Jack sounds a little worried.
“Seriously. I couldn’t convince them. You could try diagrams or blood tests or even videos, if you have them. Still not sure they’ll buy it.”
Just then the cog turns and in walk the girls, who home in on them the moment they see the three men clustered around Owen’s desk.
“Jack, where’s Owen?”
Jack blanches, Ianto shakes his head at his pleading look and the Doctor gulps before stepping into the line of fire. “Avoiding me. The boy’s apparently a bit nervous about meeting his long-lost father.”
Gwen glares and narrows her eyes at the alien, “You stay out of this. I bet Owen’s paid you to go along with this nonsense.”
“Gwen! Do not speak to my friends, my guest in that manner.” She has the decency to look slightly abashed a the reproof, but Jack continues, “And it is not nonsense. Owen is my son. The Doctor is his father and I’ll even show you his naked baby pictures if you want- oh, wait you all have them already.”
Even Ianto looks at Jack in shock at that, but he just smirks. Until the Doctor slaps his arm that is, “They got baby pictures and I didn’t?”
“Oops? Besides, they stole them while I was away.”
All three of his co-workers have taken out the pictures to stare at them. Tosh recovers from her shock enough to pass hers to the Doctor with a smile.
“That’s my baby.” The Doctor faints. Into Tosh, who is luckily rescued from under his mass by a quickly moving Jack.
“That’s a first. Wonder what’ll happen when they meet, face to face.”
