Hazel blinked at Harlan as the man interrupted his studying, his mind drawing sharply away from thoughts of the gun as a bright smile lit up his features. “Oh awesome, I love Rodriguez!” He turned and slid out of his chair, bouncing up to Harlan with a smile. “Though only if you let me get Wagon Wheels.” He strolled up to the Rancher and wrapped his arms around his waist in a small hug. He pressed his chin into the other man’s chest a bit, before he straightened and smoothed his hands down his shirt.
“Think if we leave earlier Rodriguez will stop at Tims so I can get a hot chocolate?” He didn’t wait for the answer, strolling into the kitchen to snag the shopping list from its usual spot. Hazel (not so) secretly adored when Harlan sent him out on the town. All the farm hands loved him, but Rodriguez seemed particularly fond of his company. Which meant he could liberally add things to the cart without much fuss. He had really enjoyed falling into a routine here. Everything was new and different, and just a little bit colder, but it still felt like home.
He set about wandering through the kitchen, skimming through the cupboards for any of his dwindling favourite foods. By the time he’d gone over the list and tracked down Rodriguez they were about ready to head out. “Enjoy your well-earned alone time.” He leaned up to Harlan where the man stood in the front door. He gave him a quick peck on the cheek before turning back towards the pick-up. “We’ll see you in a few hours!”
He swung up into the passenger’s side of the vehicle, waving briefly to Harlan as they belted in and took off down the winding ranch driveway.
