The question caught him completely off guard.
He stared across the table at Harlan, his mouth dropping open a bit in surprise.
He didn't know what to say.
Usually with a limp or a couple of bruised ribs, he could just blame his injuries on riding. But getting a black eye from a horse just wasn't that plausible.
So he just said the first thing that popped into his mind. "I fell." Stupid! Koel was cursing himself the moment the words left his mouth. Too late to take them back now. He scrambled for further explanation, straining when nothing came to mind. He needed to come up with better excuses for his appearance. Finally after a painstakingly awkward silent pause he continued, finishing off lamely, "I'm a bit of a spazz."
