I seen some movies recently:
Children of Men was really fantastic. The previews made it look good, but it ended up being a lot less heart-stringy and a lot more terrifying in a real-world sense. It starts off in a V-like world but at a certain point in the movie it just goes careening in a new direction (sadly the same direction the current world seems headed in). I give it four crazy gypsy ladies out of five.
Then there was Pan's Labyrinth. This movie was thematically very similar to CoM. See? It's a sign of the times, which isn't very good. It's about the Spanish fascists after WWII, but it's very relevant to the current goings on a little bit east of Spain. The imagination and skill of the direction was in perfect synch and the movie grips you by the gullet and never lets go. Gorgeous and terrible. All shall love it and despair. Five giant bullfrogs out of five.
Up next we have Steve McQueen's The Great Escape. A classic 1950's movie about a real-life breakout from a Nazi prison. The movie was quite fun, exciting, and dramatic, and it wasn't 'til the end that I found out it was based on a true story. Quite frankly amazing. And the climax comes 2/3rds of the way into it, but the pacing keeps up until the very end. James Garner really shines in this one. Five bike jumps out of five.
Oi, so much war. I also watched Blue Planet: Seas of Life-The Deep, which is so freaking amazing as always. I give this my highest possible recomnendation.
