Once upon a time, there was a young, handsome and very powerful prince. Even though he was of older age, he was still very selfish and spoiled. He would treat his servants poorly, and the poor towns people even worse. All the rich people, however, thought he was amazing and kind in every way.
One day, a poor and very ugly old lady came to the prince’s castle and offered him a rose in exchange for a place to stay and some hospitality. The Prince refused because the old lady was poor and ugly.
The prince was about to slam the door in the old ladies face when almost instantly she turned into a very beautiful young enchantress. At this moment the prince just stopped and stared, that was all he could do, she was so beautiful. At this the lady became furious and she turned the young and handsome prince into a hideous beast. The prince could not believe this! How could someone so ugly become so beautiful? And how could someone so handsome become so hideous?
Before the lady left, she gave him a rose, this rose had magic powers. The lady told the beast that if he could learn to love another and be loved back, the curse would be broken, the catch was that it had to be by his 21st birthday, other wise the flower would wither and the curse would become permanent. Another catch, he could not leave his castle, his only mirror to the outside world was a magic mirror, given to him by the lady. Even all of his servants were now cursed, transformed into objects, such as clocks, candelabras, cups, tea pots, wardrobes, etc.
Some years pass and the beast grows colder, discouraged and even more impatient. He does not welcome outsiders, basically for the fear that they might reject him.
In a nearby village, there was a lovely young woman named Belle. She was beautiful, sweet, kind hearted and all around friendly, however, most of the townspeople found her to be a bit odd and peculiar. But no matter how peculiar the town’s people thought she was, there was still one man who was completely infatuated with Belle. His name was Gaston. Gaston was really into himself. He always carried around a mirror, his hunting gun, and a group of people to tell him how handsome he was. He was treated like some sort of god, simply because of his physical features. Gaston would brag and had false illusions that he would marry Belle one day. However, Belle was not interested because Gaston was not as interesting as any book that she had read. She felt that he was inferior to the books power.
Everyday, after visiting the town, Belle would come home and care for her elderly father, Maurice, a very unsuccessful and delusional inventor. This was Belle’s routine, go to town, read a book, run some errands, come home, read some more, and then care for her father. Everyday, she would carry out the same routine. One day, though, Belle came home and found that her father had put together some spoons, an hour glass and a beaten up chess board together and called it a time machine.
“We are going to be rich!” shouted Maurice. “This time machine will make us richer then the gods!”
“Oh, Papa, that’s not a time machine, that’s just some spoons, an hourglass and a old chess board.”
“Have some faith Belle! This is what is going to save us!”
Belle knew that it was pointless to argue with her father, so she simply helped him to load the invention onto the horse drawn wagon. As she saw her father off, she yelled after him, “Buh-bye Papa! Be safe! Bring me back a gift! Maybe a nice book! Or two!”
