Like many of the protestors I haven't read the bills of SOPA or PIPA so I am passing on their merits. But I am aware that the legal system has been puzzling over what to do with the internet as technology moves faster than the courts. Actually a lot of things move faster than the Judiciary, but Congress isn't always speedy either . But that's the problem, where Congress is silent, the judges have to make rulings as they go along. They make case-law where in that becomes the de-facto law in that jurisdiction. And quite often one of the parties in the trial is a Federal regulatory agency.
So remember if you don't want Congress regulating the internet, be aware that the other two [mostly unelected] branches of government will do it.
