Suiting Up

Feb 19, 2011 21:59

Before this my suit buying experience was one trip in 1997 with my Dad to George's in downtown Manchester.  They had like 5 salesmen who had been selling suits Are You Being Served fashion probably since my Dad was my age.  Also a labrynth of racks in no particular order.

Thursday night I had to find a suit for Friday.  I went to the Tempe Marketplace, which along with my bank, Bevmo, barbecue has Men's Wearhouse (wear else?) and asked for something under $200.

At the economy rack a guy who looke abotu 19 measured me at a 39L (long).  I asked for Navy blue (what else?) and they didn't have the pants.  so I asked about black and they didn't have the jacket.  Everything else was more than $200.

So outside I noticed it was next to JC Penny.  I go in but  menswear was deserted.   Only one man was in the dressing rooms reracking the unwanted garments.   I picked a matching black jacket and pants (36W, it still depresses me) using the eyeball method. Specifically I bought a 40L black suit because my eyeballs did not see any 39s or 41s.  In fact there was a general shortage of odd numbers. I also got a burgundy/black reversible belt, go technology!

The cashier told me that the 'real' JC Penny is in Chandler and this was just a self serve outlet. He mentioned the Chandler place wouldn't exchange it if I had worn them, but said that he didn't care if I lied. okayyyyy

I had my interview Friday.  I'll blog about that tomorrow but it won't live up to the one about the Gaming Dep't.  There were certainly no questions about The Godfather Part II, Natalie Merchant, or Justice Scalia's sense of sarcasm.

Today I drove to Chandler in OMG RAIN IN AZ.  I must be turning into an Arizonan as I left 4 car lengths for the car in front of me.  I justified it as not knowing whether the Arizonan I was following would see a puddle and panic by pumping his anti-lock brakes.

The menswear dep't was clicking there.  A young man measured me and recommended I go up to a 42!?  He exchanged the jackets without asking and we laughed about the belief that no odd numbers are availible.  I left it there for their tailor to make a collar adjustment.

All in all I will end with a black suit and two new belts for under $200.  I can't complain.  Maybe some people can tell the cheap suit from the overpriced suit.  In fact I am sure the brands find a way to signal that the viewer will know the wearer doesn't save money on his clothing.
I suppose I will ventually need a 2nd suit.
