Do the dead ever get lonely?
I wonder if they cry.
A terrible thought-
to be alone when you die.

I go to the cemetery
late at night
and silently sit
among lonely gravesites.

Do the dead ever speak?
Do they ever scream
about all the things
that they’ve heard or seen?

I talk to the dead
and picture their faces
as I listen
at their final resting places.

Do the dead ever get tired?
I wonder if they sleep,
or ever get restless
in their graves so deep.

Almost as if
in sorrow bound,
I lie above them
on their hallowed ground.

Do the dead ever cry?
I wonder if they weep
for all the loved ones and memories
that they couldn’t keep.

Sometimes I cry with them
and I share their pain.
Although they’re not living,
surely, the pain is the same.

Do the dead care
about our mortal debts?
If you wrong the dead,
Do they ever forget?
