I decided to buy a media server today at Frys (DSM-510). Took me 10 hrs to set up--not kidding and ironically the easiest part was connecting it to the network. The software they gave was rather flawed (WMP works better and quicker). The video and audio kept freezing and hanging up and was a mess. Thankfully I tried my external drive as a last resort before bed and it works flawless. I'm watching an older episode of WaT that I never got around to burning and now I don't have to :)
ETA: I emailed D-Link (and called tech support since I had some music issues getting it up and running on the external drive). A tech from D-Link called me after exchanging emails and was incredibly helpful. He suggested downloading a D-Link Media Server--and why couldn't they give you that in the box? It works great now though! I'm totally shocked and surprised. I had hung up while I was on hold yesterday after speaking with one tech guy because I didn't want to wait forever to get through. It's great that they called me though to fix the problem. To me that's great customer service!
