The movie was alright, it followed plot well enough, not very hard to falter on that. The problems with the movie were mainly under two categories, Johnny Depp, and the blood. Under a lesser category, they took out some wonderful scenes, but that is expected for a movie. There were still good points, so I won't be always bad mouthing it.
As the musical's Sweeney says "What happens then well thats the play and he wouldn't want us to give it away" So if you haven't seen it, don't read.
So that devotee's of Johnny Depp can yell at me right away, I start with him. He cannot play a character made to be so cruel and lifeless, he just doesn't have it in him. From the beginning at his opening song "No Place Like London" to when he sings his final song "The Barber and his Wife", he slaughters the sounds of pain and anger in his voice. There just was not nearly enough malice to fit such a role as Sweeney. Throughout the movie, he has a genuine sound of dislike, but it was more like the anger of a child who didn't get candy rather than a man who has had everything in his life taken away from him.
So, all in all, Johnny Depp just should not have played Sweeney, not the right voice, and cannot be angry enough. So it wasn't so much Johnny Depp sucked royally, he just couldn't play it, but still got the part for him being Johnny Depp, they had to get it attraction somehow, he was a good play for that...
Anyway, onto the blood, the beginning was complete CGI blood, completely sucked, so unrealistic, not worth seeing the intro except to hear the acoustic "Ballad of Sweeney Todd"... then going into the actual killing blood, cannot say "Kill Bill-esque" enough. It was like watching some two bit sci-fi movie blood, so fake and such excess that I'd rather not have seen any of it.
To the good items, Helen Bonham Carter did a splendid job as Miss Lovette. She suprised me by having a singing ability, and she did an equally wonderful job at the character of Miss Lovette. The others didn't impress me as much, but they were all quite good... and now I've lost interest in fixing any errors in this review or finishing it... so this will be it, my improperly done review.
