Last night we tried out Jeremy the drummer. After we were done BassGuy was like, Yeah you’re in pretty much, if Joe [another drummer we’re trying out] sucks on Sunday. He apologized for it though. I would have liked to have talked privately with him beforehand about Jeremy, but I understand his enthusiasm. I liked him. I thought he sounded pretty tight, for the most part. I think BassGuy may have put him on the spot though, about what he thought about us. It sounded like he's interested in sticking around though, because he talked about future practices and such. I hoping he really DID like what we're doing. He has this really metalish, ‘math rock’, indie kinda style of playing. Where Jenni was totally minimal (very little fills and drum solos and shit) Jeremy is the opposite. He’s very busy. He’s also REALLY loud. I had to turn my amp up all the way to about 8 (out of 10). I’ve never had to turn up so loud before. It’s kinda cool.
It’s hard to tell what this style is going to do for Dead End Crush. On the positive side, it might make us sound a lot tighter and more professional. On the negative side, it might just be a mess mixing straightforward chords with complicated drum parts. We’ll have to see. I think his drumming style is going to need some tweaking. He had trouble playing Brand New Feeling, but at least he was able to keep a beat, even if it wasn’t as groovy as Jenni played it. I could totally tell that he was restraining himself though. We'll have to work with him on that, if we inevitably choose to go with him. Like I was explaining to him last night, typically, the verses and such need to be totally minimal rock type drumming. Once we get to the louder parts, his drumming should sound even cooler because he can, at that point, explode away. He did say that he was a bit of a perfectionist about song structure (so am I) so I think we’ll be able to work it out. In it’s raw form (i.e.: last night, his first time playing) it wasn’t half bad. It has some real potential.
I absolutely LOVED how Wasted (aka: Bright Red Letter Day; it's REAL name) came out the second time he played it. It sounded REALLY cool, really rocking. Again, some of the timing was off, and at some points seemed rushed, but for the most part, he seems fairly competent (and cool to boot). I really liked his drumming at the end of Failure. I think he's the first drummer I've ever played w/ that actually GOT what I'm trying to do at the end of that song. Very cool.
I look forward to hearing Joe on Sunday. I really don't want to make any decisions until we hear him though. Chances are Jeremy will be a better fit, but if Joe totally blows us away, then we have two good choices to pick from. I think I remember him saying that he may be looking for something a little harder. We’ll see.
I’m wondering whether we should invite Jeremy to the party on Sat…
Tonight I’m thinking about stopping by The Mississippi to catch my friend Jayda and Dana’s respective acoustic sets. They’re both really cool.
Oh, bad news. Apparently I’m going to have to work at least until 12pm on Xmas day. Oh well.
