* Hughes is an orphan! He grew up in different places, had some tough times but it wasn't a bad life considering what it could have been. He moved around too much to get particularly attached to anyone and he went into the military because it was his best option and he figured he could make a difference that way.
* He met Roy at the Military Academy when he was about 15. They both had very good grades.
* Roy introduced him to Madam Christmas one summer. Hughes started crushing on one of the girls in the brothel.
* And actually dated her a few times.
* He was dumped because he was a total gentleman. And they never actually slept together.
* Roy mocked him forever.
* Hughes is bisexual-- or would be if he had any interest in anyone other than Gracia.
* He met Gracia when he was 18. They dated for a bit before he was sent off to Ishbal. When he got his assignment he apologized to her profusely and said he'd understand if she found someone else. She called him dumb :(
* They wrote each other a lot while he was off at war. Hughes kept all those letters in his closet at home.
* After the war they dated for a couple of years, then once Hughes had a decent salary within the military he went "WE CAN FINALLY GET MARRIED :D"
* ... after that, he actually bought a ring and an apartment SECRETLY. He prepared a romantic dinner that ended up kind of burnt, and spilled wine all over the table. And proposed while being a nervous wreck.
* They got married when Hughes was 23. He cried on his wedding.
* He also cried when Elysia was born. He was 26!
* He called on Elysia being a girl ever since Gracia told him she was pregnant. "WE'RE HAVING A BEAUTIFUL BABY GIRL ♥" "SHE'S TWO MONTHS PREGNANT YOU CAN'T KNOW YET STFU."
* Speaking of which, he had a major flip out prior to Elysia's birth. "ROY I'M HAVING A BABY. ROY A BABY. OH MY GOD WHAT IF I BREAK HER BABIES ARE VERY SMALL"
* Roy smacked him out of that. The second Hughes held his daughter EVERYTHING WAS UNICORNS AND RAINBOWS.
* During the first month after Elysia was born, Hughes would spend hours just watching her sleep. Gracia got a rocking chair in the baby's bedroom so he'd have somewhere to sit on.
* Still, whenever he got home late, the first thing he'd do was visit Elysia's bedroom and watch her sleep for a while.
* Whenever Hughes couldn't sleep, even if he didn't get out of bed, Gracia would wake up a few minutes later.
* Hughes doesn't wear his wedding ring when he's on a military uniform. Back home it was extra protection, he didn't want people to know he was married in case someone decided to hurt him. In camp he takes it off out of habit.
* Also, he only ever showed off his family pictures to people he knew.
* Hughes can cook! He learned because whenever he had days off work he tried to do everything at the house. Clean, cook, do the laundry, set the table, wash the dishes.
* He accidentally set the stove on fire.
* Twice.
* Roy visited once while Gracia was out shopping and Hughes was having a tea party with Elysia.
* Roy was forced to join in.
