Off to Calgary once more to help lay waste to everything on the dancefloor. All the djs from the Schlactoff (can't remember the spelling) events are hooking up again to rock out. A night synthesized by true believers in dark electronic music and the aesthetic of the machine, Automatik strives for thematically based events charged with utilitarian angst and driven by a combination of idealistic purity and constrained madness.
Automatik challenges individuals to transcend and discard traditional beliefs about what is ‘acceptable’ or ‘reasonable’ for a nightclub event, encouraging, rather, fanaticism and absolutist intensity. Automatik seeks to construct a contained dystopia, a synthetic, machine-ordered alternative reality fraught with polarities: the elation of victory fused with an undercurrent of despair. Automatik realizes dark futurist visions; twisted metal fused with stinging raw meat, smoke and black clad bodies in a no-man’s land of a dance floor all witnessed from behind the filthy lenses of a gas mask. Automatik aspires to singularity of vision: to disciplined elegance and rapacious ferocity combined with divergent thought and integral acuteness. Automatik celebrates the awkward beauty of machine music, angular German dance and precise, electronically enhanced consciousness.
As the name intimates, Aufstehen is a call to awake and stand up, a challenge to shake off the lethargy and apathy of Calgary. Occurring in the aftermath of Stampede, Automatik seeks to scorch away the painted on cowboy façade from Calgary’s bleeding, putrefied flesh. Aufstehen is also a beckon call to every believer in the scene, a challenge to unify and build a cohesive foundation from the fragmented shards of counterculture. Aufstehen is a politically neutral event encouraging all sects of dark culture to converge and harmonize; it is a congregation of unified will and hammering, aggressive power.
