Last weekend was a hell of a lot of fun. It started with Friday's Das OOntz. Preperations went well (thanks to Nik for helping with the set up) and dj Pyxis made it in on time. The beats kicked in and the night rocked. Each time we have a Das OOntz darkrave, more people show up. That is wonderful! It did get quite loud on Friday, though. Gonna keep a leash on that volume button next time out. Pyxis helped me stomp the hell out of the club. It was a blast spinning with him and I'll certainly have him back out again. My guest for the next Das OOntz is to be dj dAndroid. I smell more good times ahead.
After the OOntzing stopped, a number of us went to Denny's for some much needed psudo-food. Pyxis blasted himself with a creamer. That was funny as hell. A true money-shot! What is even crazier? He did the same thing the next morning for breakfast (yes... we ate breakfast at Denny's too). Good guy.
Saturday night before dancing I had a great time hanging out and being geeks with friends playing Paradise Lost. A really good game that a friend of mine has been developing for years. He's shooting for publishing. We're all shooting to help him.
Saturday night's dancing was full of goodness. Thanks for that, too, Nik!!
Sunday morning I made my way down to Calgary with Matt for the Blixa show. We packed up all my dj gear into his car and hit the road. Setting up for the show was pretty neat. It was not a venue I'm used to playing. It was the stage of a 'sit down' theater. There was a band setting up next to where I would be playing. They're called Hydraulic Empire. They were pretty interesting to watch. For having a lack of polished/produced material, the show was quite nice. The singer (don't know his name) got really into his songs, which was good to see.
My sets involved all my gear (plus an extra cd deck provided by Subdermal), an electronic drum kit, two keyboards and a man with a bassoon. It was a hell of a time (in a good way) playing ambient and tribal themes along side these other men. It was entirely unrehearsed! So much fun. There were a few spots where we were still feeling for each other's styles near the start... but for the most part, I think it went pretty well.
Then Blixa came on. I thought his show would have drills, hammer and steel pipe (something he is famous for) but was surprised to find that his whole live set up was a microphone and 4 foot controls. By creating loops of his own voice he was able to create complex, and very layered, music. It was truly a work of art. Complete songs were built before your eyes. From nothing but a little 'tick tock' sound to a symphony of singing voices, Blixa owned the stage.
After the show, I helped tear down and pack the sound gear into a loading truck then went for drinks with Blixa, his wife, his sound guy, Danny, Ben and a number of other folks from the Calgary scene. It was really funny at one point. Here I am sitting with Blixa and his wife. Next to me is Calgary's best dj, a tattoo shop owner, a big league sound man, a former club owner/promoter as well as a couple of others and the one guy that capture's Blixa's attention the most is a guy that breeds yaks. I'm serious... this guy went into detail about yak breeding and had Blixa totally frikkin' rivited. I guess if you've been to one afterparty, you've pretty well been to them all. This afterparty, however, had a yak breeder. Hey.... it's all in who you know.
Crashed that night at Subdermal/Nimonic's wonderful home. As I took the day off work to do the show, I was in no big rush to get home. Finally I had made it back from Calgary in one piece.
There.
I say poo to not updating in forever!
