should I leave the elephant just standing there?

So I'm trying to write this SGA fic; it's girl!Rodney(Meredith)/Ronon/John and I've come to one of those moments when I'm not sure what to do because I'd rather not a) piss my readers off and b) use a white girl writer cliche.

John's watching Ronon and Meredith and...bam! I come up against the whole contrasting skin tone issue. I talked it over with darkrosetiger and she flailed a little too. What we finally figured was, if John doesn't notice the difference, then it's like the elephant in the room. On the other hand, if he does...well that's a cliche that pisses a lot of people off, which I'd rather not do. When I'm just writing two characters with different skin tones, I tend to not do the contrasting thing because I figure the characters are less likely to think about it in the middle of sex.

Any thoughts?

PS I'll be staying away from food metaphors regardless. :)
