that was very interesting. had no idea his parents had immigrated from Spain or that he'd been such an indepth committed activist. that's really inspiring.

I remember in his autobiography, he talked about performing in all-black productions in NYC where he was the only actor who wasn't black. After the first week of previews, he was inundated with mail criticizing him for playing the love interest of a black woman and (gasp!) daring to kiss a black woman on stage. He said that that was a real eye-opening experience for him.

His autobiography is pretty thin, unfortunately. You read it thinking there's just so much here that you know he's leaving out because he's such the consummate gentleman.

oh wow. that's really really interesting. and i'm sure his experiences just spurred him to be more committed to activism.

yeah, he always had that air of being a gentleman.
