Pam Noles versus the Golliwogg stereotype

Dec 31, 2007 02:36

I don't need to tell you that Pam Noles wins (in every possible sense). Her five part examination of the Golliwogg as a blackface stereotype, and especially in relation to its appearance in Alan Moore's League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, is on her blog and, if you have time, you should read it all: part 1, part 2, part 3, part 4, part 5. ETA: Part 6.

For future reference, this page is worth bookmarking too because it's "well-spoken" enough for ignorant people to be able to understand: The Golliwog Caricature (from the Jim Crow museum of racist memorabilia).

graphic novels, comics, imagery and representation, is it true what they say, pam noles
