So, I'm working part time in a convenience store now, and there's something bothering me more that it has in a while. When did laws going from protecting people, to wrapping us in swaddling clothing?
I work for a corporate convenience store, so we have uber strict rules about who and how to card. We are supposed to card anyone that appears to be under 30, regardless of whether we know how old the person is. My little brother could come in, and if my manager saw me not carding him, I could be written up. I suppose it's to get everyone into the habit of carding everyone, and so people are used to being carded, but it's a pain. This is not my point though.
Lets say I refuse a sale to someone for a pack of Newports. Now lets say that a few minutes later someone else comes in for Newports, someone that was with the first individual and asks for a pack of Newports. I am expected to refuse this sale, regardless of ID. Now I understand that it's likely that this person is buying the cigarettes for their friends, but Newports are popular.. this person might be buying the smokes for themselves. I don't think it's my job to refuse this sale. On top of this, there's a chance I could be fined or fired for making this sale. And this leads me to my second point.
Drinking. There is a legal age for drinking, an age where one is considered responsible enough to drink as an adult. However, if someone happens to leave a bar intoxicated and gets into an accident, or is pulled over the BARTENDER can be held liable. The bartender is told to keep an eye on the drinkers and make sure they have a Designated Driver or is able to drive themselves home. If someone is responsible enough to legally drink, shouldn't they be held liable to control their drinking? I think it is insulting, that a person's decision to drive drunk is their decision.
This seems to be a growing trend. I know the drinking law has been around for a while..and apparently the crackdown on smoking is more recent... it's been pushed more recently anyway. There were those two lawsuits against fast food, one for the hot coffee incident and the other someone sued a fast food restaurant for making them fat. Due to this lawsuit there was talk about making trans fat illegal. ILLEGAL. A food that's illegal. I again find this insulting.
I know I'm a super liberal. I believe that everything should be legal. Drugs should be legalized and taxed and distributed by the government... regulated and sold. Then at least junkies aren't getting into as much trouble on the street, and they can be sure what they're getting is clean. It could be taxed, lowering other taxes. And possibly, there could be a paralytic put into the drugs so that other people don't have to deal with the user doing things distracting, offensive or embaressing in public. Now I have to go off to work, so I'll end it here. Its been bothering me for a few days and I just wanted to post some of this rant.
